Additional First Class Award Space Inquiry

Fellow friends,

I would love your advice:
  • I am currently flying with my partner from MEL-BKK in J and BKK-CDG in F this September.
  • On the united website, it shows that there is 1 seat left in F from SYD-BKK (none in J and one in Y) for the same day.

My question to you find people is - is it worth taking the risk to switch one ticket to the SYD-BKK in the hopes that they release one more seat? I would have snatched the F is there was any availability in J, but there is none at the moment.

Thanks for the help!

A tough call.
Where are you located?
Thereís not a lot of time till Sep.
I was able to reserve 1 I and 1 O on BKK-SYD 10 months ahead and then switch after 2.5 months so both are in O.
Which FFP are you using to get the awards?

Located in Mel, so taking a hopper to Syd is not a problem.

It is in late September, so still some time.

I am using United Mileage Plus, but I have quite a few AmEx points too (if it helps).

I wouldnít risk it (unless going on a 747 is something you must do because itís soon going to disappear from the sky).
Thereís no night flight out of SYD. Itís either 10am or 4pm.
If I were you then I would take the 11pm A350 flight out of MEL in I and then take the A380 night flight in O to FRA.
In any case if you do decide to go out of SYD, UA will upgrade to a higher class when seats become available for free (like being manually wait listed).

If the you go 1J and 1F award out of SYD, and nothing changes, then the 744 J seat is worse than the 359 J seat - although as flyby notes, the ex-SYD flights are 10:00 and 16:00.

I'd stick to what you have. The 359 J seat is fine for that leg.

Thank you for the recommendations! At the time, we will keep the 359 J, and we will have ~2 hours to maximise time in the BKK F lounge.
Note it was the 10 AM flight that had one seat available in F.

Fortunately, we tried the 744 F in May en route to Korea, so I am not dying to get on it (unless two F appear). We REALLY enjoyed the experience of F (Singapore F Lounge, etc), which we know will be replicated en route to CDG,

The 359 was truly lovely (flew it BKK-ICN-BKK-MEL in May), so we realise it will not be a worst case scenario

TG F availability is patchy SYD-BKK. I wouldn't risk it either.
