Looking at one way business redemption on United Miles on Thai.

NRT-BKK-HKG, do I need to pick up my luggage at BKK? Considering buying couple bottle of Whisky in Japan if they airline need me to pick up my luggage and clear customs then this option should be off.
If they take this as transit then I guess no need to pick up luggage.

I doubt TG will accept to tag your bags to final destination when you arrive in the afternoon and your flight to HKG is not until the following morning. Everyone/TG will assume that you want your bags in BKK, i.e. only tag them to BKK.

The fact I don't want my luggage till when I go back to HK, might need to ring TG to confirm this.

was in the same situation twice with arrival in BKK in transit and flight out of BKK the other morning; both time they did not want to check through luggage at first check in but after I insisted and asked for the station manager, both times luggage was checked through

Sometime cheaper to get a "lay over" (sorry ;-))

I advise against leaving your bags with them overnight if you have some expensive stuff in your bags. Doesn't need to be electronics, any decent brand items, perfumes are prone to be missing.
In that region, I only trust SIN for safekeeping my bags more than 2 hours.

I was planning to get my horde of Japanese Whisky there as I can't take them into BKK! :( There goes paper records and insurance paper ready for stolen luggage.

Freshen up with facial and massage plus a nice meal and back to BKK at around 3-4 am in the morning waiting for the lounge to open. :D:D
