Tax free wine allowance Thailand

I am flying onto BKK in a couple of weeks for a 16 day holiday in Hua Hin. Travelling with my wife and baby. Usually I would stay at a hotel, but we have rented a house instead to be more flexible.

How much wine can we bring with us. I was planning 6-8 bottles of wine, no liquor and no cigarettes. The reason I was planning this was to make sure I have some good bottles of wine rather than saving money on taxes.

I have had some bad experiences on holidays in Greece where it is impossible to find good wines anywhere, only the greek ink.

I am already assuming this is over the limit. If it is,

what kind of trouble could we get. Fine, confiscation.

Could I just pay the duty?

What is the limit?

Anyone know if it is possible to find a good wine merchant in HuaHin.

1 L per person is a limitation for bringing alcohol into Thailand.

It´s one liter person and I don´t think there´s an easy way of bringing in more (like paying duty on the amount exceeding your allowance, as you can do in other countries)

There at least two which I have used: Mondo Vino and The Wine Shop, which is located close to the Scandinavian golf course.

Of the two I enjoyed spending my Bath the most at Mondo ^

I would avoid bringing so many bottles. Things can get nasty at Thai customs.
You can find good wines in major tourist destinations (including HuaHin as mentioned above). It is just that the prices are very high, in part due to taxes. But the troubles you could get in at customs, besides confiscation, could be significant.

Visited one along the main street through Hua Hin to purchase some "highly priced" NZ wine. They had a reasonable range available.

I will try and find the name.

We spent a few weeks in Hua Hin this year and stocked up at Tesco supermarket. The wine selection was ok, we bought some lovely NZ and Italian drops, albeit much more than we would pay in Oz. But we were on holidays and I thought not much of it!

BTW: we stayed at the Sofitel and it was amazing... Highly recommended!

Cheers,

AG. :-:

Three people equals 3 liters. You're fine to bring 4 bottles of wine. Any more and you're taking a chance.
