upgrading on TG using miles
 

It seems one can upgrade pretty much any TG fare class using TG ROP miles. Before booking my flights I just wanted to confirm: Is there a special upgrade fare class that needs to be available or are upgrades taken out of award inventory (presumably booking class I for business class)?

I.e. if I see award availability for TG business class, can be I be sure the upgrade (using a friend´s miles) would clear instantly?

Most fares can be upgraded using ROP miles, but the lower the original fare class, the more miles are needed.

Note that you have to be a registered nominee to receive the upgrade from another member.

I believe a member can have 5. When deleted/adding a nomiee there is a cost associated. TG *G can edit nominees for free.

be aware: it does not pay off to upgrade from the lowest fares - then can happen that you pay as many miles for a one-way-upgrade to business class as you otherwise willhave to pay for a return Economy class ticket (which might be more attractive and less costly than a one-way-upgrade).
Check and think about very carefully!

I agree with Creole Spirit. I don't think upgrades are very good return on miles. Better to save them if you can for a free flight.

Thanks for your input! Indeed, mileage upgrades rarely are a great deal. In this case I´m looking into booking a RTW (should book into H) and already have upgrade instruments for most legs, so using miles for the remaining 1-2 flights may be worthwhile.

Yes, Jesper, it should be the same class as for awards.

I booked a TG flight in Buchungsklasse Q and want to book an upgrade with LH miles but was told that upgrades only possible from BK B and Y.

That seems right. I foyu want to upgrade using miles from another *A partner, usually only the most expensive booking classes B and Y are eligible. AFAIK you can only upgrade the lower booking classes using miles of airline´s FFP, i.e. TG ROP miles to upgrade a TG flight. (the same probably is also true the other way around: You can probably only upgrade B and Y fares on LH using TG miles, while you can upgrade many more fares on LH using M&M miles, though it´s a pretty bad deal most of the time)

Correct! I wanted to upgrade my LH Q-class ticket to business class with my TG miles and I was told it is only possible for Y or B class bookings. But who in the world is booking the those expensive Y or B booking classes?!? I rather book a discount business class ticket...So cross *A upgrades are really a pretty bad deal...:td:

On the contrary, by booking Q-class on TG, no problem to upgrade with my TG miles ;).

Same thing with collecting miles cross over the *A network. V-class on LH international flights earns M&M members 100% miles but only 50% to TG members, T-class 50% miles to M&M, 0% miles to TG members....

Probably similar situation for cross *A award bookings. Does anybody know, how many M&M miles are needed for BKK-FRA-BKK on TG and how many TG miles are needed for the same trip on LH? And what are the chances to get seats?

Is the inventory the same with outright reward on C (in the case of Y to C upgrade)?

only can do with TG (call/fax/office visit)
