Dallas in November
 

Hi folks, I have 1.5 days to spend in Dallas between the 9-11 of November. I am wondering if anyone has any suggestions on interesting things to do? Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Well, it's tough without knowing anything about you, your interests, or the part of town you'll be in.

That said...

The Dallas Museum of Art is hosting an exibition of artifacts from King Tut's tomb that has been getting a lot of notice here. I'd suggest advance tickets if this interests you.

The Nasher Sculpture Garden (next door to the DMA) is always a nice place to spend an hour when the weather is good. I hate art museums myself, but I like this place.

Myself I don't really care what I do, but I am bringing my fiancee with me and she loves art and culture type stuff. I looked for any pro sports games and didn't find any teams playing during my stay, so I was looking for landmarks or anything Dallas-esque that would be memorable.

Forgot to mention that I am flying into DFW and I don't have a hotel picked out yet but put a post in the Marriott forum for any nice Marriott properties to stay. I am planning to rent a car and be mobile, so I should be able to get around.

Marriott doesn't have any great properties in DFW unless you want to stay at the Worthington in FW. If you're wanting to stay in Dallas, I'd go with Hotel Palomar. Great location, great food, easy access to lots of restaurants in nearby neighborhoods...and the hotel itself is a great property with wonderful service.

There's also a number of Starwood Properties in the area:

- Hotel Joule (just opened) - Where Pacman Jones recently got in trouble...again.
- W Dallas Victory - Victory Park is a great area in general...the hotel is nice but the service definitely isn't one of the better W properties.
- aloft Las Colinas - About 15-20 minutes from d/t Dallas. It's close to DFW and would give you a chance to check out one of Starwood's new hotel lines.

The only sporting events I found going on were:
Nov 9 - Texas Stampede Rodeo
Nov 11 - Mavericks vs Lakers (probably too late for you though)

If you are looking for Marriott properties and your fiance is into art/culture, skip Dallas and do Fort Worth... more museums, a better walkable downtown scene, and a more unique flavor. You can always day trip over to Dallas if there is anything you are dying to see there, but frankly Fort Worth has a lot more to do.

If I weren't going to be out of town, I'd organize an impromptu DO for you guys.

i did priceline for 3 day stay($77). stayed at the Hilton lincoln center. nice hotel.

The Sixth Floor Museum in Dallas is not to be missed. It is extremely well done. The Nasher Sculpture Museum is also very interesting and enjoyable. I liked it better than the Dallas Museum of Art.

I second the suggestion of checking out Fort Worth, but I would do the opposite, stay in Dallas and day trip to Fort Worth.

+1 for the Sixth Floor Museum. You might also check out the Dallas World Aquarium to see if that might be of interest.

Additional art stuff includes:

In Dallas, the Crow Collection of Asian Art. Small, free, located inbetween the Dallas Museum of Art and the Nasher.

Also, NorthPark Center. A large mall that was built by Raymond Nasher so it has a lot of sculpture from the Nasher's personal collection spread throughout it.

In Fort Worth, you have the Kimbell Art Museum and the Modern Art Museum of Fort Worth. Both well known, both for their art and the buildings. The Kimbell will be inbetween major exhibits, but the permanent stuff they will have out will be open and free. You will have just missed the Kara Walker at the Modern. Pity.

But it really is a day trip to go to Ft Worth and back from Dallas (about an hour each way), so you may not have enough time.

And there are many more smaller museums and galleries in both cities.

We went to Dallas/Fort Worth a year or so ago just for the art (3 days). And another 3 days in Austin just for the BBQ ;). With only 1 1/2 days - I'd probably stay in Fort Worth. Do the Modern Art Museum and the Kimball. And the cattle drive in old Fort Worth too (which is fun). I would definitely try to get to the Nasher in Dallas as well for at least an hour or two.

Note that November 10 is a MONDAY. Lots of museums are closed on Mondays - including the Museum of Modern Art in Fort Worth and the Nasher - the only 2 I looked up. IMO - there is an awful lot to do in the area - and you're kind of shortchanging yourself by only taking 1 1/2 days - the middle one being pretty much a "closed museum" day. Maybe you can add an extra day to your trip? Or reschedule it unless there's another reason you have to be in the area then. Robyn

I am going over to DFW for an impromptu trip to attend a week long conference next week. Any recommended restaurants around / near the Convention Ctr?
