what to do in Dallas?
I have a weekend layover in Dallas in a couple of weeks. Can anybody suggest anything good to do/stay in DFW or surrounding areas? Something activity based rather than just trapsing the bars and malls for 2 days would be good.
Thanks |
Hi!
if you want to see something more than the usual American downtown - which is kinda neat in Dallas anyway, I'd suggest to head outside. Otherwise, both the aquarium and the Art Museum (above all this last one) are worth a visit. White Rock Lake is a cool area with a dam and all the green around also interesting for a good walk. It's full of animals (I even saw pelicans over there last year). As far as other places around Dallas, Fort Worth has got a nice zoo, while Arlington has a Six Flags, which I guess you know it's an amusement park where you can find all those weird fried thingies Texans do love so much... Hope that helps as a start |
Stupid me, I was forgetting the most important historical feature: you've got to give a look at the street where President Kennedy was killed and the memorial monument. Plus, the museum dedicated to this subject just on the right side of the street. This in Dallas itself is a must!!

It should be added that the museum is on the top floor of the Book Depository (now a state office building as I recall). The sniper's nest is preserved as it was. The only way to really understand the actual shooting is from the perspective of that floor.

Unfortunately Dallas is pretty much a bar and mall town. Not alot to see and do except for shopping, good restaurants and tons of trendy bars/clubs. For art and culture the Dallas Museum of Art and the Nasher Scupture Garden are worth a visit. The Sixth Floor Museum is also nearby.
I think Ft. Worth is more interesting Texas destination with its historic stockyards for a taste of the old west, living up to it's nickname "Cowtown". FT. Worth also has a real downtown with some nice restaurants and a great concert venue, Bass Hall. The Kimbell Museum is a national treasure. You could continue the western theme with a visit to the Amon Carter Museum or if your tastes run modern the Ft Worth Modern is just down the street. Dallas and FT. Worth are now linked by the Trinity Express Railway which will take you between the two downtowns easily. Dallas also has a limited but decent light rail system, DART, which does NOT yet run to either airport. have fun, dan |
