Unfortunately when you involve HMSHost in anything, it's going to get screwed up.

I find that Lockhart Smokehouse in the Bishop Arts district of Dallas has the best meat of Dallas-area BBQ joints; a couple other places are also worth trying especially if you find the side dishes to be an important part of the meal (Lockhart's sides are somewhat of an after-thought), including Pecan Lodge in Deep Ellum (expect lines) and Babb Bros. in Trinity Groves

My top picks within a ~10 minute drive of the airport:
Hard Eight BBQ in Coppell. Huge barn-like structure. Order at the semi-outdoor pit, by the pound, central TX style. Can be excellent, but sometimes inconsistent. Beer & wine available.
North Main BBQ in Euless. Offers an all-you-can-eat buffet. Not traditional, but I like being able to choose exactly which rib I want, exactly how fatty a piece of brisket... Very good, especially the ribs. Only open Fridays and Saturdays from 11:00 am to 9:00 pm and on Sundays from 11:00 am to 4:00 pm. No alcohol.
Bartley's BBQ in Grapevine. It made the last Texas Monthly top 50 list; I went once and thought it was just OK.

Meat U Anywhere in Grapevine. New joint. I haven't been yet, but it got a nice write up from TMBBQ.

None of these will be easily accessible without a rental car (try Priceline) or taxi ($22 minimum leaving the airport). If you have extra time, maybe take the DART line one stop to Belt Line and then call an Uber-X to head up to Hard Eight.

The recommendations here are great. The problem with the corrupt taxi industry in the Metroplex is that any trip from the airport will be expensive no matter how far. UberX is available to the airport (but not from the airport).
If you want to stay at the airport, head to Terminal D - lots of good restaurants, including BBQ at Cousin's and Railhead.

Dickey's is one to avoid. Not thrilled by their meat quality and find the brisket smoke to be underwhelming.
For a chain, Rudy's runs circles around them. If Rudy's opened up in DFW, they'd definitely have a following.

They recently opened one in Frisco right off the Tollway near the Costco.
