FYI - I emailed the reporter and the incidents were at the on airport parking areas that are relatively exposed. I only use the private lots which are fenced and gated. Such activity would stand out a lot more there.

Covart is the seventh catalytic converter theft victim at D/FW Airport in the last two months.

Thieves are taking tailgates, too; ten of them have been reported stolen since January, which is already more than last year, police said.
...

The thieves may be driving vans since they are large enough to conceal the purloined auto parts without being seen by surveillance cameras along the roadways. Victims said that's what officers have told them.
So 17 incidents over 8 weeks. One thing about on-airport parking, the airport should know the license plate numbers of every car that's on property. They should be able to run a database query to find all the vehicles on the airport at the same time. Maybe narrow down to those who were in and out in a few hours or less, since the thief probably didn't park overnight before the theft. Take the intersection of the result sets to find any who were on site for all 17 incidents. That should be a pretty small set. Narrow down to vans, pickups, SUV big enough to haul off a tailgate, and there's your prime suspect.
