Houston

Hi, I am going to have a 1 night stop over in Houston and since I have never been to Texas before I would like to try a really good steakhouse or BBQ resturant.

Anyone who has been there, is there any suggestions for places near the airport?

LOL, I will answer this based on other people's experiences (I am vegetarian:D)

High end steakhouse = Fogo De Chao. (westheimer road, Galleria Area)
Great BBQ but not too expensive = Goode Company (Kirby @ 59-South Freeway).

Downtown Houston is a good 30-plus miles from IAH airport. Galleria area is a few more miles away.
Will you stay at the airport area or more in the city? That will let people give you better recommendations (somewhere closer to your hotel).

Well I was planning to stay near the airport, I land at 7pm and my morning flight is at 6am, so I have time for a good meal and thats about it.

Sadly, the restaurant options near the airport are somewhat lacking. There are a few of the Pappas restaurants (Pappas BBQ, Pappas Seafood, Pappasito's Mexican) nearby in the Deerbrook Mall vicinity. There's Saltgrass Steakhouse (Texas [Landry's] steak chain). They're not bad. Everything else is at least 30 minutes away going toward downtown or the Galleria.

yeah I "presumed" ;-) that too but figured I'd double check.

The downtown to IAH Airport Direct bus is now only 4.50$ so it is still doable if he is at IAH.

One of the best chinese restaurants I've ever been to is hidden in Houston near Hobby airport. It's called 888 Chinese restaurant. Ask for the "chinese menu" and try #14 or the sizzling beef. This place is amazing and inexpensive!

I will second the recommendation for Goode company - it's great. Going to cost you a 30-40 minute drive though.

http://www.mytravelguide.com/restaur...staurants.html gives the impresison of a pretty grim choice of places, especially if, as I assume, you're relying on taxis and shuttles to get around (I certainly wouldn't rent a car or pay the taxi fare into downtown just for a quick meal; don't know about the bus mentioned above, especially with a very early flight). You might "luck out" by being at a hotel with a good restaurant (we did at the SeaTac Airport Hilton). Or maybe the hotel will have suggestions. If you're flying Houston-based Continental, your in-flight magazine may have ads for Houston restaurants. My wife said she had a very good meal at the Marriott inside IAH (in CK's Revolving Restaurant), but it was courtesy of the airline. Her review may have been different if she'd had to pay.

BTW, Fogão de Chao is a large chain of Brazilian-style "churrascarias" (all-you-can eat meat place), found in several states.

If you're at IAH, The Woodlands may be closer - Perry's Steakhouse (get the 7-finger pork chop) or Fleming's.

If you go downtown, Vic and Anthony's. Ask for Reynard Levigne as your waiter - he used to be at the Commander's Palace in NOLA pre-Katrina...he is one of the best waiters in Houston.

For BBQ - Pizzitola's off of I-10 & Sheperd - but they are best for lunch. I went at about 7:00 PM and the ribs were a little past their prime. Lunch though...awesome.
