Hung Screen All Weekend Long!

It's happening all weekend long. Not sure if it has anything to do with system slowness or whatever updates IB's doing to FT.

Anyway, I have hung screens when I start or reply to threads, RBP, or send PMs. My Firefox would indicate contacting FT website in the FOREVER state. There's no way for me to confirm if my RBPs go through.

What I do is after 30 seconds (or longer) of hung screen, I will open another window and see if my reply posts (or threads) have been posted. I also check the sent fold for PMs. They are there. So are the hung screens in the other browser windows.

This is not the first time for this sort of problems. How "unstable" is the current state of our FT site w/ IB Beta Search?

goalie Jun 15, 2008 10:27 am

exactly the same problems for me as with lin821 above

dhammer53 Jun 15, 2008 11:37 am

Started for me on Friday(?) and definitely on Saturday.
When I sent PM's, I saw that they were sent 3x's. I kept clicking 'send'. The message went half way through. Then, I stopped the message and re-sent. Repeat. ;)

This just ahppened. I stopped sending this thread. This is what I saw when I tried re-sending.

This forum requires that you wait 30 seconds between posts. Please try again in 12 seconds.

Same problem.

Jenbel Jun 15, 2008 1:26 pm

Problems on Friday, but so far not too bad today.

Kiwi Flyer Jun 15, 2008 2:39 pm

Not sure if it is related but I've gotten the "database error" screen a few times the past few days.

HIDDY Jun 15, 2008 3:26 pm

I've had lots of problems replying to threads today but better since changing from Firefox to IE.

cblaisd Jun 15, 2008 10:36 pm

Pretty bad here too, whatever browser.

For every post I've made this weekend, I've had to submit it twice to get it to take.

And PMs/RBPs just hang forever, even though they do get sent.

It seems the hung screen problem is gone this morning. Didn't have this problem with my RBPs during the last 30 minutes or so.

lin821 Jun 17, 2008 5:33 am

Still Hung!

I may speak too fast (again).

The problem just returns when I tried a new post in the Search Problems Master Thread. :(

This appears to be one of those pesky intermittent problems. The tech team has been looking into it and has as yet been unable to resolve it satisfactorily. Of course, the effort is ongoing.

Thanks all for relaying your experiences. Hope to have this repaired very soon.

SanDiego1K Jun 17, 2008 4:08 pm

It's hanging badly this afternoon. I have to keep two screens going for FT so that I can refresh one to see if what I attempted to post on the other has indeed done so. Further, I've gotten as many as 3 RBPs from a member whom I am confident was unaware that 3 were submitted.

goalie Jun 18, 2008 9:03 am

hanging badly this morning for all my posts. my post hangs, i open the thread i'm posting to in a new window, go to the bottom of the last page and there is my post with the original post window still hanging (n.b. the preview post fncn works just fine)

KevinSours Jun 18, 2008 10:27 am

Posting to test the problem.
Edit: That worked fine. If you are still experiencing this, can you point me to a thread where you are having the problem? The previous problems we experienced seem didn't occur in every thread.

I'll try to poke around and see what I can see.

Kevin:

If you want to check your logs, the United Forum was frozen at about 10:20 a.m. Pacific Time. We had at least one duplicate thread started by a user due to the slowness.

Thanks.

I just now posted to this thread
http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/showthread.php?t=832139
the window hung five minutes (before I navigated away from it), but the post had posted.

When I send PMs today, it takes almost a minute for the PM to send and the screen to return to the main Private Message screen.

EDITED TO ADD: The same thing happened with this post!

Mikel at Webflyer Jun 18, 2008 1:34 pm

According to one of the lead developers at IB, there are a whole host of people working on this issue at the moment, all of whom he says are much smarter than him :p

The only new information I can provide is that this appears to be a firewall-related issue. I'm sure that isn't comforting in any way, but it's all I know at the moment.

Kiwi Flyer Jun 18, 2008 4:07 pm

Still getting problems with RBPs and PMs timing out.

Just to check RBP = regular board post?

Is it consistent or does it come and go? Any pattern to it -- particular threads/users? Are you noticing board slowdowns at the same time or just posts and PMs?

I still can't reproduce it on this end. I had something I thought was the culprit logged, but its checked out all afternoon so it has to be something else.

RPB = the "Report Bad or Misplaced Post" feature, which creates an email notificationto the moderator(s) of the forum.

goalie Jun 18, 2008 5:28 pm

seems to be working much bettah as my posts are now going thru wicked fast

edited to add: except this one  as it took a full 30 seconds to go thru as opposed to other posts which took at most 2-3 seconds

Its a configuration problem on one of the three webservers that runs the board. I've passed it on to the admin folks.

Curious as to why this is so difficult to get fixed?

Now, sending any PMs hangs indefinitely and you don't know whether the PM has actually sent or not.

I've taken now to cc'ing myself on all PMs, keeping a second FT window open, and refreshing it to see if the PM was received.

Pretty frustrating.

EDITED TO ADD: Now the yellow box indicating that I have a PM is always lit and says I have one PM, even though I don't. Sheesh.

EDITED FURTHER TO ADD: When posting on this thread, the screen just hung forever.

If there are webservers for FT that actually work, maybe you could simply give us their direct ip addresses, Kevin?

You probably don't need to cc'ing yourself on all PMs. My "trick" to verify whether my PMs is sent is keeping a 2nd FT window open and directing to the "Sent Items" of my PMs (I believe the default setting is saving all outgoing PMs in Sent Items). Once refreshing the 2nd screen, if PMs are in my "Sent Items", I assume they have been sent (well, sort of "risky", I know). Of course your strategy is a step up and confirm the PM on the recipients' ends.

Kevin, speaking for myself, I don't think FT is slowing down when I run into hung screens.

Maybe you can try to send PMs to your IB fellows and have a dose of the hung experience. ;)

Maybe it's time to have a new lead developer (or more) at IB? :D:p

Back to seriousness, I have the same question as cblaisd: Why is it so difficult to find the fix?

Hung Screen Again!

Tried to do a RBP just now and the screen hang forever in a non-responsive manner. :(

Are we having another FT weekend "hangover" episode again? ;)

ScubaCat Jul 12, 2008 2:43 pm

When submitting a post, it hangs in firefox. (works fine in IE.. weird..)
