Emailing an OMNI thread
 

I would like to send a thread on Omni, the one on getting academic jobs -- which is actually quite serious and reasoned -- to my girlfriend, who is in exactly the same predicament. However, it doesn't appear I can do so, when I click on "email this page," I get a notice that I am not empowered to send it.

Is this a general rule for OMNI? I have never tried to send an OMNI thread before. If so, is there some way I could send it to her regardless?

You don't actually email the thread. You email the link to the thread.

I would imagine the option isn't available because Omni has access restrictions.

Sorry, emailing the link is what I meant. But this is a sober, rational thread that just happens to be OT for FT. There ought to be a way to give access to it when it might help someone -- more generally, is it really a such a huge sin to give people in the world at large access to individual OMNI threads?

Even if you send your girlfriend the thread link, she won't be able to see the thread using the link. When she gets to FT, log-in will be required. If she's not OMNI-enabled, there's no way she can see the thread LIVE.

Well, let me take a step backward. I was assuming she is one of us FTers. Is she? If not, I think you should work harder on her and make her OMNI-enabled. :p

You are asking to make exceptions to the "rules", right? On a case-by-case basis? Who's going to monitor and approve those exceptions? Randy or our mod teams?

I totally agree there are indeed great threads in OMNI that may benefit the "general public" or the parties of interest. However, both OMNI and CC are not open to the general public. Taking CC Forum for example. If FT had applied your logic (our CC Forum would definitely help someone out there, let it be a total stranger or FT frequent), I would expect to see more than just "brokers" and "beggers" there. It happened before, as we all know. I don't think that will do any good to FT community.

Another workaround is for your to use your OMNI "power" to visit that thread and print out the whole thread (either paper copy or PDF), then send it to her. You will have to send her the updated version every week or so though. That way she will at least get to see the jewel in the discussion.

Or if you trust her, share your password with her....

If you do not, get a new girlfriend.... :D

I thought about this "backdoor" workaround earlier for OP but didn't want to risk suggesting something (maybe) against TOS. I, for sure, don't want to create the possible confusion of a multiple-personality associated with my handle.;)

Is sharing your FT P/W with trusted friends acceptable? :confused:

Well, there's a difference between just reading the content of threads and "impersonating" the handle. She can read any thread in printout format, if OP so provides to her, without rendering his own FT password. With FT P/W, she can certainly do more than just read.

With OP's FT P/W, she could act like OP in FT and do whatever she wanted (posting, ridiculing, or even inflaming) under OP's identity. She could even get OP into trouble. (I am not saying she would.) But what if she had a post that got OP suspended? Could OP claim FT identity theft? That's why I thought of all the TOS complications.

I didn't mean to go OT with my line of "philosophical" discussion. To OP, sorry I didn't mean to question your trust and relationship with your GF. Nor was I challenging her personality. Those "technical challenges" just came to my mind when I thought about any acceptable workaround.

Print the thread in a pdf which you mail to her. For updates, subscribe to the thread and forward any new posts that occur :)

I ended up by just showing the thread to her on my computer which is pretty much right next to hers.

Needless to say, I am not worried about her doing bad stuff on my account. Even without me telling her my password, she knows me well enough that she could probably figure it out pretty fast anyhow!

This sounds like something that would really benefit me, too, since I'm a struggling academic myself. Do the rules allow someone to put an OMNI thread into a file and email it? If they do, I would really appreciate a copy of the thread. I've been a FlyerTalk member for quite a while, but I rarely post because flying and Frequent Flyer programs aren't my area of expertise.

Well, I suppose I could just start posting even when I really have nothing to contribute. (Which is, in fact, what I just did.)

FYI, post-padding is another big no no at FT.

I am a grad student and don't major in FT either. However, there are quite a few fora you can participate (just to name a few: CommunityBuzz!, TravelBuzz! DiningBuzz!, Trip Report Fora). Take your time to share and learn, you should be able to reach the threshold sooner than you realize. I'd never thought I would have made 1K (posts, I mean :)) back in 2004. Look how far alone I come! :D

Even when you don't know the answers to flying and FFPs, asking good questions is a nice way to get the discussion/learning going. @:-)

OK, so the rational for this disabling this function was because of access restrictions. Now that the access restrictions have been lifted, shouldn't this function be enabled?

guess what -- you are correct. Even I couldn't email a thread from OMNI. Let me see what might be wrong here. Obviously some small set-up button that was overlooked. I'll report back and thanks for bringing this to our attention.

all fixed now and thanks for the heads up. Even I can now send an OMNI thread along.
