what time is it now?

Ordinarily, when I log on to FT, the time I see as the time on my watch, which is set for Eastern Standard Time (US). Today, the time I see is 1 hour behind (earlier) what is on my watch. Is this a consequence of Congress' decision to extend Daylight Savings another week?

I assume that you mean your watch is set to Eastern Daylight Time, not Eastern Standard Time. Ironically enough, if FT did jump the gun on switching back to Standard Time from Daylight Saving Time, then it is Eastern Standard that FT is displaying for you.

However, it does seem to be displaying the correct time now. 10:57am PDT for me. Tough to tell, though, as I'm in India this week, and the timezone conversion is hard enough without Daylight Saving Time ending!

Quite right, my watch is currently set for EDT, and it has been one-hour out of sync with the time that shows on my FT screen. Strange that you would see 10:57AM PDT, which is in accord with the official time here now (a little after 2PM EDT). Are you able to look at what you would be seeing on your home or office computer right now, though you are in India?

Does FT somehow manage to show each of local times where we are, or do we peg our home timezone in the beginning and always see that time displayed no matter where we are when logging in?

The FT time is correct. I'm on PST time and it shows just past 11am here.

Double check your DST Time settings - mine's set to "automatic", and there are options for DST always on or off.

Does your computer show the right time?

I am on my laptop which stays on Pacific Time, so I am on my home computer right now.

I'd view FT Wireless from my phone which says the correct India time (11:41pm), but ummm, we all know how well that's working. :)

:( I'm not sure how much more I can take of this thread, it's hitting some pet peeve hot buttons. :)

PST is not a generic term that means "Pacific Time". It means Pacific Standard Time as opposed to Pacific Daylight Time. It is currently just 10am PST, just past 11am PDT. :)

As long as I'm having a hissy, I might as well add that it's Daylight Saving Time, not Daylight Savings Time. Present Participles don't have an "s" on the end.

</pet peeve rant>

LOL Rob

It's amazing we make timezones as convoluted and complex as it is.

Present participle? Not an adjective, or gerund? "Savings" isn't a participle when one is speaking of what they have set aside for retirement or other purposes, is it?

"Savings" is ok if you're using it as a noun (such as what you've set aside). So I suppose you could speak of your daylight savings account.

But "Daylight Saving" here is not a noun; it acts an adjective modifying time. What kind of time is it? Why, it's a daylight saving kind of time! It's not a "post writing" time nor a "grammar correcting" time. :)

Spelling and grammar

The official spelling is Daylight Saving Time, not Daylight SavingS Time.

Saving is used here as a verbal adjective (a participle). It modifies time and tells us more about its nature; namely, that it is characterized by the activity of saving daylight. It is a saving daylight kind of time. Because of this, it would be more accurate to refer to DST as daylight-saving time. Similar examples would be a mind-expanding book or a man-eating tiger. Saving is used in the same way as saving a ball game, rather than as a savings account.
