Suggestion: Add thread start date to thread subject
 

Would it be possible to add the thread start date after the subject on a forum homepage?
Currently one can see the “Last post” date but not the first post date.

This small change would make it easier to understand if you are looking at an old thread that someone has revived or a recent one.

I made this request of House of Miles some time ago (you can see the thread in the Suggestions or Technical Issues forum).

They indicated that this was not possible with the current version of vbulletin they are using without some programming changes... and they did not want to tweak the software.

Now... I am going to move this to the Technical Issues forum in case things have changed.

Thanks for the feedback and sorry for posting in the wrong place. I was thinking that since FT runs vbulletin and since this feature is part of Vb I figured it was worth a shot.

Lets hope we hear something good from the technical staff.

Spell check
 

How about adding a spell check feature? It would not be too hard I think.

I for one use http://www.iespell.com/ which allows you to right click on your text input box and spell check directly without having to cut & paste into word etc.

Most bulletin board companies have stayed away from building a spell-checker in (vBulletin included) because todays modern browsers have them either built-in or coming in the next generation. That is the current "word" on the topic from the vBulletin owners threads. I use Safari on the Mac and it's built-in though for the life of me still allows me to use the wrong word....

It probably has more to do with our goal to keep FT clean. Is this possible? Of course. But not without adding an additional column to the layout and that will mean either a larger screen or a longer one since we can restrict the screen size but it forces the thread title - and the Expedia one - to perhaps become a three-line thread title rather than a two-line. This of course will be compounded by a larger number of being eligible for this.

As for it being an older thread? For some it doesn't matter since the bump usually creates new information making it a "remodeled" thread. I'm not sure that this makes much difference to a vast majority of members but we do know that messing with the screen size and complexity does make a difference.

The ultimate would be for members to choose their own and let us see what we can do. We are awaiting final tests of a newer version of vBulletin and perhaps in this upgrade there will be additional flexibility on the user level for this to happen. Because of the size and traffic if FT, we have opted not to be among the ear;y adopters of any version change for vBulletin, accepting that what we have works pretty good right now and let others find performance and other bugs first.

We always appreciate any interest in these types of suggestions and our goal is to somehow manage the overall clean look with individual preferences.

In the vbulletin forums that I have seen this feature used, it did not require a new column. The date was simply added as text to the end of the topic name. I understand your need to keep the screen size smal and more importantly consistent. No admin want to receive 100's of emails about an unintended bug.
For me being a relatively new to FT, I can't hope to read every post in the many forums that I follow. Having the date started field would help me (and others) decide if I wanted to start down a multiple page thread. And thanks to a kind FT'er I ordered 2x Dell 20" Widescreen monitor, so screen size is not an issue for me. :) http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/showthread.php?t=410058
