Link to quoted post not working properly

When a post is quoted within another post, there is a blue arrow button that's supposed to take you to the post being quoted. It's this icon: https://www.flyertalk.com/forum/imag...s/viewpost.gif

In some posts in multi-page threads, this button doesn't seem to work properly. It seems that it may have something to do with changing pages to get to the quoted post.

For example, post 34278564 in https://www.flyertalk.com/forum/brit...ld-lounge.html (post 961 in that thread) is (for me) the first post on page 25 - https://www.flyertalk.com/forum/34278564-post961.html or https://www.flyertalk.com/forum/brit...l#post34278564 (https://www.flyertalk.com/forum/british-airways-executive-club/1653179-best-t3-oneworld-lounge-25.html#post34278564).

It quotes post number 34278534 (post 960 in that thread, the last post on page 24 for me). For me, the URL under the icon is https://www.flyertalk.com/forum/british-airways-executive-club/1653179-best-t3-oneworld-lounge-25.html#post34278534.

Within the quote, simply left-clicking the https://www.flyertalk.com/forum/imag...s/viewpost.gif icon does nothing.

Right-clicking the icon and then opening the link in a new tab or window takes me to the very top of page 25 (not the first post on the page). The same happens with CTRL+left-click. Refreshing the page doesn't change anything.

However, if I copy the URL, paste it into the address bar and press enter, the very top of page 25 loads and then after about a second, the page auto-refreshes to load page 24 and position the page to the quoted post. This is what I think is the designed behaviour when a URL in this format points to the wrong page. After the auto-refresh, the URL has (correctly) changed from:

https://www.flyertalk.com/forum/british-airways-executive-club/1653179-best-t3-oneworld-lounge-25.html#post34278534
to:

https://www.flyertalk.com/forum/british-airways-executive-club/1653179-best-t3-oneworld-lounge-24.html#post34278534
This works properly in the same way, whether I do it in the same tab, a different tab, or a new window.

My guess is that a simple left-click of the https://www.flyertalk.com/forum/imag...s/viewpost.gif icon is supposed to do that (and it seems to work properly without difficulty when the quoted post is on the same page). But if so, it's not working properly in some circumstances.

It works for me on Chrome, although it does take a moment. Could you see again? It may be related to needing a database refresh that has now happened. But if it occurs for you still, what is your browser?

I'm using Chrome 101 on Win 10 Pro.

This is still happening in this example, although it's only an example. (I've encountered it in many threads over many months - I've only just got around to posting about it!)

Having another play with it using what I posted above, I've discovered something else:
  • If I go to https://www.flyertalk.com/forum/34278564-post961.html, the https://www.flyertalk.com/forum/imag...s/viewpost.gif icon works. That URL is what is in the address bar, so there is no page number in the URL.
  • But if I go to https://www.flyertalk.com/forum/british-airways-executive-club/1653179-best-t3-oneworld-lounge-25.html#post34278534, then the behaviour is still exactly the same as before.
That rather strengthens my suspicion that the problem is linked in some way to changing pages to get to the post being asked for. (I've deactivated the URLs above so that there's no automatic parsing by the FT software.)

OK, using that method, I was able to replicate and I will report to tech. Thanks!

That's great - thanks, IBJoel!

I have noticed something like this from time to time (I hadn't noticed any consistency to it) where the blue arrow icon did not seem to accomplish anything. On closer observation, when you click the blue icon, although nothing visibly happens in terms of jumping to the right post, I've noticed it /does/ seem to update the intended URL in the browser bar. So, as a workaround at least, if you click into the browser bar and then hit enter, your browser will then load the updated URL as if you were visiting it for real, after which the page will reload, may stall in the wrong place for a few seconds, but eventually it processes the #xxxx anchor and does (finally) jump to the right post.

Not as great as when it "just works", to be sure, but until/unless IB is able to fix it, you can give it a try...

BTW, as a tangent, it would be great if the "jump to quoted post" feature could be added to them mobile skin too.
