Obnoxious popup
All,
I've repeatedly seen this popup and I don't use any ad block software. Please fix. |

Are you seeing actual ad units when this popup message is displayed?

Since this is not a community topic the thread is being moved to the Technical Support and Feedback forum. Thank you for your understanding.

Simple fix: add the rule "www.flyertalk.com###adBlockerModal" as mentioned in my post https://www.flyertalk.com/forum/27307345-post183.html

I do use an ad blocker. Why? Because the ads that obnoxiously pop up on Flyertalk are always the same for me. Either for a Chase Credit card (which I already have) or for a Hyatt Credit Card (which I don't want)
I don't mind banner ads but the pop up ads that FT uses are more than annoying. If there was some variety I might be inclined to take the blocker off but they are both very annoying. |
At a maximum of once per day per user, the pop up message will be displayed to people coming to FlyerTalk who are not logged in, and are detected using an ad blocker, or tracking prevention (including FireFox Tracking Protection).
I've been informed the reason for this is that FlyerTalk is only free to its members because it is supported by advertisers who pay per impression. Those using ad blocking or gleaning information for their use who do not want to sign up for this community are in essence getting an unintended "free ride" as they are not supporting FlyerTalk and our community in return for the benefits gained (my words, not Internet Brands' or FlyerTalk's). It's possible some browser-specific issues might be detected, as this is new. If so, let us know; please add a screen shot if you can and share as much information as you can so Admin can have a look at this with as full info as they can. (Erasmus III, some of that should help if it's browser specific.) Admin / Tech will work to make sure the new pop up (as if 5 Sep 2016) works as specified. Thank you for your understanding about this issue. JDiver, Moderator From Internet Brands' (FlyerTalk's owners) Terms of Use (link): "4. I don't know where else to post this so I'll post it here.
The whole ad thing on FT has become increasingly annoying and obtrusive to the point the site is barely readable with ads enabled. They pop up in screen and occupy endless chunks of real estate beside and within posts. And as mentioned above, they are always ads for things that are relevant but useless to me (thanks, I already have all the United Chase credit cards I can get). I don't have a lot of sympathy for the argument that says I'm getting a "free ride" when I'm also providing the content. In fact, I don't want a free ride and for many, many years paid for a subscription to be ad free. I'd happily pay for another, so my willingness to support the business side of the operation is not in question. So the inevitable conclusion may well be that my eyeballs and contributions and those of others go elsewhere and that begins a spiral that doesn't have a happy ending for anyone. Please please give us some mechanism to reduce/remove the intrusiveness of the ads, even if I have to pay. However, like my other limited attempts on this topic, I expect this may also be censored and/or deleted. An ironic post for my 1,000th after 16.5 years. |

Understood. If and when that becomes possible, we will ensure that the option is clearly available to all.

With Ad-Blocker switchedOFF most pages take 5-10 times longer to load and they regularly (about every hour) cause the Flash player to crash!
Seeing up to five adverts for the same company on any page is is to mock the intelligence of the user. Since there are only 24 hours in a day I have to apply Ad-Blocker in order to use FlyerTalk. |
