Spam PM, E-Mail or Suspicious Friend Requests from FT Members

Occasionally, a new "member" may bypass the FlyerTalk spam protocols by not posting, but yet send spam via PM (Private Message - newer members are limited to sending five PMs a day), or invite members to become "friends" (with probable intent to spam).

These can be reported to Senior Moderators, IB representatives willing to be contacted (IBobi at this time) or the Community Director.

Current (as of 6 Nov 2016) Senior Moderators include l'etoile, newbierunner, Ocn Vw 1K and Prospero; SanDiego1K for a PM to the Community Director.

Hi, thank you for your report. May I have the member's name that you've received the PM from?

Sometimes there will be a difference between the # of posts a member's profile displays and the # in the database. Also some methods of counting do not include posts in certain forums.

It can also be the new member had one or more posts but had them deleted in the interim.

Hello,

Our Community Director confirmed with me that there is no longer a requirement # of posts that needs to be made to PM within FlyerTalk. So it is working as it should! Thank you.

inbox spammer in private messages?

I have done a search and as usual on this site have had no joy. I just got a huge inbox/private message spam including a freakin video from a user called wukong89 and flyertalk even forwarded his message to my private email address.

Actions I need to understand: 1) where/how do we report this person? I can't find an alert button. 2) Flyertalk needs to NEVER send me any notifications from a user with 0 posts. How do we set this?

Otherwise my option seems to be blocking all notifications from flyertalk itself in the future, as I just don't have time for this. Thanks if anybody can help. And sorry if it's posted in the wrong forum. As I said, I did search and I simply couldn't figure out where it would go better.

If flyertalk is now forwarding advertising to people's email address without permission, this is so far over the top that I don't want to be here anymore.

Help, explanations, anybody?

Sorry you've had this problem. I've moved your post to the a Technical Support forum where it will get more appropriate attention.

Regarding the email you received, FT didn't forward the PM to your email, and isn't sending advertising. You probably received an email notification of the PM. It's also possible the spammer emailed you directly through the FT system.

There are two settings you may want to turn off. If you use "edit options" link on the left side of the My FlyerTalk screen, you'll see "Receive Email from Other a Members" and "Receive Email Notification of New Private Messages" options.

Our apologies for the difficulties.

You can always limit how people contact you on FT (you can, for example, receive an e-mail to the addie of your choice when you get a PM, and prevent all others than Admin or moderators on official FT business from e-mailing you).

You can (and IMO should) also forward this kind of spam to the senior moderators, any or all, or Admin, and we can take appropriate action.

We and Admin folks seen here in this forum have FT addresses that are FTHandle <at> mail <dot> flyertalk <dot> com; substitute our FT handle for "FTHandle" and "connect the dots" to use usual e-mail protocols, or use our handle to forward a PM. (Sorry for the "connect the dots" routine but none of us wishes to open our e-mails to possible spider harvests here.)

It's just a spammer. Not much we can do to prevent people from making a new account and sending out a few PMs.

I have banned the member and deleted all the PMs they send out.

update

I have now sent the offending email from flyertalk to the address a moderater emailed to me although it sounds like this individual has already been banned at least for now.

I understand that it's a spammer but there is absolutely no reason why a member with ZERO public messages on flyertalk should be allowed to use the message system to contact other members. This is something that should only be offered to people who have successfully posted 10 or 100 posts without complaint or been involved for a certain number of months or both before they are allowed to use private messages...

Sure I can turn off notifications. Then I won't get the notifications from my remaining friends here and there is no reason for me to use flyertalk (rather than Twitter etc) at all. Does that make sense to you? I have already directed excess emails like Talk Mail into the spam folder...I feel a little sad that I'm really supposed to do this for the entire site?

The whole point of making my complaint is to stop one spam from being followed up by many. If there's no way to stop the spam, well I guess I have my answer but clearly I'm not too happy.

peachfront, I can tell you are frustrated and I am sorry about that. In the last couple weeks, Internet Brands asked me for a decision as to whether folks with no posts should continue to be allowed to send PMs. I discussed this with the senior mods, and decided to continue to allow the practice. Why? Because there are legitimate reasons why someone signs on and sends a PM without making a post. We've had some journalists sign on to send a PM to someone they would like to interview for a story. I've also gotten PMs from no post members who work for companies. They want to better understand how they can represent their company on FT before they start posting.

We get a report like yours about every 2 or 3 months that someone is spamming via PM. These tend to be for escort services or offering millions of dollars in an African bank. It's annoying, but at least the software caps them at 5 such PMs per day. If FTers are attentive, we learn about these spam attempts in the first day. We act quickly, cleaning out all the PMs sent by that member and suspending their account.

I would rather that rare annoyance for the few members who are unfortunate enough to get spammed in order to allow the positive for the journalist who is working against deadline and wants a good source for a story. I hope that gives you a better idea why the policy is remaining as it is. Should the volume of spam by PM increase, I am open to reconsidering the policy.

Spam received via PM.

Spam receive via PM.

I've just received some spam from a bogus member via PM. Screenshot attached. Wasn't sure where else to post/report this.
