lock out

Just wrote a long report and got locked out from the system, all the content was gone when I was ready to submit the post, stupid setup, at least you should get a warning before that

A long report?

Can you be more specific about what happened? You started writing your report, it took so long to finish that you were logged out by the time you finished, so when you went to submit, you had to log back in?

Solutions:

1. Always click "remember me" when you log in.
2. Be sure your browser accepts cookies.
3. Use your *back* button to get back to your content as soon as it leaves the screen (then save it, maybe as a word doc, temporarily).

I've had that happen to me before (and yes I had clicked remember me). Now if I'm writing something long I copy it in case I get timed out so I don't lose the content. There's another thread re: your experience as well. Some FTers periodically click on preview post so FT still thinks they're active/they don't lose their content.

Cheers.

Just as an fyi that doesn't work. Found that one out the hard way, which is why I now copy whatever I'm writing that's long so that if I get bounced out of FT I don't lose the content.

Cheers.

Worked for me (Safari) so perhaps it's browser dependent?

Did you do an extremely long post (took a long time to write it) & then got kicked out of FT because FT thought you were in-active due to length of time it took you to write it & then went back via re logging in & then clicked back & your content was still there? I've encountered the content not being there on back (given the above scenario) on both IE & Chrome, so I don't think it's browser dependent.

If it's just a regular back situation w/o FT thinking you're inactive/kicking you out, the content is still there. But that's not the situation the OP (or I) encountered.

On a dif note, I found the thread where someone reported the issue before & others mentioned they encountered the same thing & came up w/ the various work-arounds.

If you're typing something long, it may be better to use a word processing program, then copy and paste. I've lost a few posts, too.

I honestly don't remember. I'm usually on 'remember me' so I think the computer just hung after a long post.

FYI I have asked that some sort of bank-style warning popup be written into the code. If it happens (?) I wouldn't expect it to be soon (months/years?). Best to use the workarounds mentioned above.

There's a great plug-in for Chrome (maybe other browsers) called Lazarus Form Recovery that remembers everything you type in a field. You'll want to look at the various settings after installation -- for example, do you want it to remember what you type into password fields? -- but it's great for recovering text in cases like this.

Out of interest, and not to criticise, why does this take sooooo long?

It's because there is a standardized version of the forum software that runs literally thousands of sites. It's not a matter of coding for FT alone.

Ah, thanks.
