Why wait 60 seconds between reporting bad posts
 

Three obvious spam posts in the USA forum. It's ridiculous that I have to wait 60 seconds between reporting each one. Reporting bad posts is something that users do as a courtesy to moderators who may not be monitoring a board 24/7. By making it more difficult than necessary, you're decreasing the odds that users report bad posts.

It's because the tool is open to abuse otherwise.

in other words, people could use it as a way to try and crash the site. / spam moderators.

the way to get around limitation is to send PMs to moderators.
(and PMs sent can contain links to multiple problematic posts.)

The "Alert a moderator to this post" function works quite well the way it is for many moderators. We get an email from the AMP, PMs go to our PM in basket for sorting. My PMs also go to e-mail notifications, so I can easily differentiate them.

As one of four Senior Moderators, we get AMPs from every forum that doesn't have appointed Moderators, as well as PMs regarding moderator issues such as posts sent to the moderation queues in those same fora, complaints, questions or suggestions regarding moderation, and too often PMs from members who feel it's acceptable to PM me with their questions instead of posting them in the appropriate fora. :confused:

It's very helpful to me to have the differentiation, and NOT have AMPs, which often have a greater time value to them and are easily disposed of, go to my PM in box.

The one minute delay does help prevent someone mischievously or malignantly abusing the system.

JDiver, a logistics question: If I see three separate spam threads in one forum, do I have to alert the moderator to all three? (Alert, wait 60 seconds, alert, wait another 60 seconds, alert) or can I just alert on one and say something like, "You'll see three other similar posts in the same forum," or "This new poster has spammed six other threads," and leave it at that?

chgoeditor, i have said things like that using button and PM, and have seen multiple posts (and even spamming users) dealt with at 'same time'

sometimes i put in a link to different post in button/PM submission, sometimes when there are things like copy/paste post padding for example

JDiver, context of my comment was for example if there are a dozen problem posts, although a single report post button submission could also contain multiple links

Speaking for myself, either will do.

If it's in a few different forums, I report each.

If they're in the same forum, I note that in my RBP so the mod can look for them.

IMO when someone take the time and trouble to report spam to FT, they are giving a gift that the powers that be at FT should appreciate. People should be encouraged to report spam and one way to do this is to make it easy for someone to quickly report multiple cases of spam in different fora.

Sixty seconds is far too long. Surely shorter wait periods would effectively stop the abuse and attempts to crash the site while still making it easy for people to do their good deeds by reporting the spam.

Sometimes RBP is used to report cases of inappropriate posts which in some cases the person reporting it has some reason to want to see corrected, such was when the posts contain personal insults against the person doing the reporting. In such cases, RBP is done more out of self interest than to improve FT in general, but I still think we want to generally encourage and motivate people to report bad posts. The waiting period has the opposite effect and hence is undesirable in its current form.

I'd not support anything less than fifteen or (perhaps better) thirty seconds.

The delay was instituted, iirc, from experiences with disgruntled members trying to disrupt. Mikkel from HOM would remember better.

MSPeconomist did a great job of eloquently expressing what I was trying to say. When members used the RBP button appropriately, they're doing so in an effort to help the moderators do their jobs and help improve the overall quality of the board. An extended wait between being able to RBPs discourages people from using it. I presume the moderators can see who's sending in each report. If there really are disgruntled members who are abusing it, can't they just be put in a timeout?
