Topics that have been edited can still be seen.

Use search to bring up a list of results that contain a topic subject that has been edited.

The original, unedited, subject can still be seen.

I've avoided providing a specific example, for obvious reasons, but it should be easy to test http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/smile.gif

It could be the search index not updating when it should. I'll rebuild it to see if that helps at all.
