incorrect password = lost work

I just spent around 45 minutes working on a post.

When I hit post, I got a message that the password was incorrect and to hit BACK.

I did that and voila, BLANK MESSAGE FORM. I LOST ALL MY WORK!

I've worked with many different BB programs and this is the first time I this has happened to me. THIS SUCKS.

Did you try also to press "back" on your browser? Not the best method - but often very helpful.

lewinr Aug 23, 2002 1:49 am

yes, I did press back on my browser... that is exactly what the page instructed me to do... "Sorry, but the password you entered was not correct. Please try again. Use your Back button. "

Yeah, this has cropped up before; I've done that myself a couple times.

Check the following setting (assuming you use Windows and IE)

Tools > Internet Settings > Temporary Internet Files (Settings)

And set "check for newer versions of the stored page" to "automatically", otherwise IE will pick up a new version of the page every single time you go back or forward clearing your forms cache.

Something else that might help is flushing your cache, you'll see that option on the same screen as the temporary internet file settings.

I hate it when that happens. http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/frown.gif

As a safety precaution, whenever I am composing long posts, I will periodically select the entire message textbox and copy it to the clipboard. Alternatively, I will sometimes compose my reply in notepad.

So I'm not the only one.

I would hope that the publishers of this software are trying to fix this, it is extremely frustrating!

Unfortunately it isn't a problem of the software but a problem with the browser...

I disagree - the fundamental problem seems to be that FT doesn't have a "signin" function which would set lots of things up for you when you first open the site in a new session (or if you didn't because cookies had been lost you could manually signin again). This is how all the other BBs I use funtion and it is fine.

I dont agree.

For a web-based application, a problem with the browser IS a problem with the software, if it is a browser everybody is using. (In this case I'm using IE 6.0 which I guess is the most popular, or at least in the top 3). The publisher should figure out a way to deal with the problem so that people dont lose their work.

Well, I don't have the problem (I just tested it on 3 different PC's) so obviously it is a settings issue. I tried it on FT miles and FT travel as FT travel does have a cookies issue. As I stated earlier I suggest clearing your cache and letting UBB reset all your cookies through it's preferences link. If this was a structural problem I think out of the 1000 posts a day more people would run into it...

I doubt this... IE won't delete the entry of forms when you use the back button unless it's setup to do so, I don't know of a function that lets you move back AND delete the page cache...

One possible solution: Copy your text (mark the text and hit CTRL+C) before clicking ´Submit Reply'. This way, you can simply paste the text in case it's lost when you hit 'back'

lewinr. Has happened to all of us I guess at some time. Just curious WHAT thread were you posting to that took a 45 minute post? did you type it again?

Yes, I do that sometimes, but this time I forgot. My frustration is that I really shouldnt need to do that. I dont feel it is an unusual incident, it has happened to me a few times. I dont blame flyertalk, I blame the people who make this BB software.

I recently started using YaBB for another board and I was really surprised by how much better their software is. One of the best features is that it keeps track of exactly which threads have new messages on a thread-by-thread basis, and keeps that information for each user on the BB server. That way, I can login from any browswer anywhere and see exactly which threads have new messages. (In contract, this BB software only stores the info about when I last visited in a local cookie. So if I access flyertalk from any other computer I dont see what threads are new. Also, it doesnt store that information on a thread basis, so all messages prior to the date of my last visit, whether read or not, are "old".) Given the amount of travelling the I (and I'm sure most other FTers) do the YaBB system where you can login from ANY computer and see what is really new would be a godsend on flyertalk.

Ron

It was about DVD players in the AC Forum (a review of various portable ones and where/how to buy them). I didnt bother retyping it because I was too frustrated about having lost my work.

See, maybe you should have burnt it all on a disc. http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/wink.gif
