Blinking ads
 

I noticed today for the first time ads at the top and bottom of the screens that are hugely invasive, moving/changing/blinking VERY fast. If I scroll to ignore them I lose part of the screen data. Is there a way to turn these off?

I don't like the constant pull away from what I am focused on. I have pasted paper over the bottom several inches of my TV to avoid the scroll.

This kind of persistent brain stimulus, in sensitive people, can cause convulsions; in persons with epilepsy especially.

If you use Internet Explorer press ESC, this will stop any animated pictures, other options include turning off ALL pictures within Internet Explorer (though not advisable as FT navigation is based on some picture buttons) and lastly to use an ad blocking program, I don't advise this last one as it blocks off revenue the board would otherwise make. If an ad annoys me I just press ESC.

Edited to add: If you use IE 5 and higher try turning off the "Play Animations in Web Pages" option, this is found under TOOLS>INTERNET OPTIONS>ADVANCED under the MULTIMEDIA header.

I am using Netscape 6.2.1 I don't see a way there to deselect. Thanks for letting me know the IE options though. IE is another invasive software package <sigh>.

I haven't seen any of the obnoxious ones, yet; I seem to get the Expedia ones all the time, myself.

As far as scrolling goes, though, you should be able to scroll past the banners and then ignore them. You shouldn't lose any screen data, since there's nothing on those lines other than the banners. For example, if you scroll down (past the top banner), you've only lost the banner; the FT navigation is under that banner. Same for the bottom banner: if you scroll up an inch, you lose the banner, but still maintain the Hop To links at the bottom.

Or do you mean something else with the term "screen data"?

Is there a specific ad that's causing these problems for you?

The worst offender is the Expedia one that keeps moving. If it's a short topic and I scroll past the top, it shows on the bottom. I find it quite dreadful and do my best to ignore it and focus on the topic, but ...

FT is the first thing I do every morning and I have been looking forward to that exchange. Now, not. The overload is unpleasant.

I thought you were referring to the "Winner!" ad that was run a while back. That was one obnoxious ad, and once we found out about it, we had it pulled.

The Expedia ads, although animated, are pretty tame by today's advertising standards.

Unfortunately, those "short" pages, such as the "Thank you for adding to the topic..." transition page, are short enough to show both ads at once. Same with a new thread page that only has one or two posts...

Speaking of ads, I usually ignore them. Is there any benefit to FlyerTalk is we clickthough, or do you only get revenue from hosting the display?
