I would repeat my suggestion that FT publicize a "status" link re FT (hosted on another server, obviously) for when FT is down.

Proactive updating by FT would also be nice.

John's been on the phone with our hosts this morning... they seem to be reboot happy over there. He has scripts in place to restart apache upon reboot, but they're not triggering for some reason.

Give us a little more info on what you would expect from an off-site status page for FT...

Hi Dan! thanks as always for the update.. I think Randy's board had a thread on our idea's for a status page...

a link that could be accessed form an alternate site (like webflyer or whatever you designate) that would update network/site status...kinda like some providers do to let you know if the network is up or down.
and of course whatever info you have on when it might be up again...

All I'm really looking to see when a site is down is:

"The site is down, we're aware, we're working on it."

Even better would be an estimated time for fix and a brief description of the problem, but that's a nice-to-have rather than a necessary.

For example, when the board was down this morning, I couldn't remember whether it was scheduled maintenance or not... A simple line would have revealed all. ("Someone tripped on the power cord." "Randy spilled coffee into the server again.") That sort of thing...

Does FT have a monitoring system that checks URL status, not IP ping status, and sends an email alert?

Yes, after the last long outage on 2/23, I started a thread on Only Randy Petersen re. But I can't search that now.

My thoughts exactly! I'd be happy to host it off of my personal website, as I'm sure alot of FT'ers would be, if there is no other server that it could be posted on from Randy's outfit. But, if, for example, insideflyer is on a different server than FT, one could simply publicize the link, e.g., www.insideflyer.com/ftstatus or some-such and then give exactly the info Matthew suggests

If FT doesn't have a URL monitor, I'd be happy to monitor the URL and have my system send an email alert to somebody's pager. I do this for my 45 webservers.

Although I posted this suggestion as a note on PremEx's thread, I'd like to resurrect it here too, since there are a number of good ideas and offers about having an FT network status page for days like today.
