Digichat
 
For several days now, the chat starts buggin' me again and kicks me out every now and then. The problem exists with both IE and Netscape. Any ideas?

does it give you any error messages? Or does it just close and drop you to your desktop? Can you check it again and see if it's still giving you trouble?

Dan, thanks for your response.
Basically, I hit submit of my next message, and the chat window closes. I am back to my browser window then, showing me the connect-button.
If I click to reconnect, it gives me a socket error message. I click OK, click connect again in my browser, and I'm back in.

The connection to the DigiChat server was unexpectedly broken.

java.net.SocketException: Socket read failed

Can you answer a few questions for me:

1. Have you had these problems in the past (other than the last week)?

2. Are you connecting through any firewalls/proxy servers?

3. What browser/operating system are you using?

I'll forward on your error report to DigiChat and see what they have to say. Thanks for your patience...

Dan, to answer your questions:

- I did have the problem in the past, but it got worse over the last couple of days.
- OS is Windows 2000 with IE 5.5 or Netscape 4.7
- I have a DSL connection and connect through a router, no proxy server

DigiChat just got back to me:

The next time you're kicked out, try to do a tracert (right after you're kicked out). You can do this by opening a DOS window (Start->Programs->Accessories->Command
Prompt) and typing in:

tracert host5.digichat.com > tracert.txt

This will send the results to a file called tracert.txt. Send the resulting file to us at [email protected] and we'll pass it along to DC.

Thanks for sending me your traceroute file. I sent it on to DigiChat, and this is what they got back to me with:

This client has to make a very large number of connections, or "hops", before reaching the host5 server. I counted over 20 connections between his computer and ours. This is possibly because of his isp, but is most likely a result of his geographical location. Either way, a connection with that many hops is a very slow connection and one with a large number of chances for failure. If there is too much delay or a connection loss at any one of those hops, the user will lose connection to the chat. There really aren't many options for resolution of this matter beyond moving the client or moving the server so that the connection is shorter. Possibly a different isp in his area would have a connection with less hops, but even that probably wouldn't be significant enough to eliminate the problem.

But at least it's not kicking me out...
