help me, PLEASE!
Can anyone tell me why I get dumped constantly when I'm on this site? It doesn't happen elsewhere. My ISP guy (who I believe is an idiot) says it's because I have a "cheap modem". He's emailed (he says) DELL to get whatever he needs to support my modem. In the meantime, I'm forever being dumped. Any help/suggestions you can offer would be GREATLY appreciated. Thanks!

I don't know if this is related, but several people (myself included) have had problems with JavaScript errors in the ads at the bottom of the pages. (Reportedly IE is somewhat more tolerant of them than NetScape.) If you turn off JavaScript in your browser the site stabilizes. In Netscape 4.x, choose Edit>Preferences, scroll down the categories at the left to Advanced, and uncheck Enable JavaScript. In other browsers, I don't know.
I can't imagine your modem causing a problem with this site but not others. |
I concur with Efrem. I have to turn JavaScript off to prevent Netscape from locking up on this site, and I'm on a T1, so no modem to blame.

Efrem & Eugene: Thanks for your answers, however, I'm not on Netscape. IE 5.0 is my browser. I also don't know how to turn off Javascript on IE. I just wish my idiot ISP guy would DO what he said he would, at least then I'd have proof of his being full of hot air! In the meantime, this site is better some days than others . . .
(edited to correct the spelling of Efrem's name. I HATE it when I mispell a person's name!) ------------------ It's not a perfect world. [This message has been edited by mudgal (edited 06-15-2001).] |

You might want to share the name of your current crappy ISP in order to save other Fters from your sad fate. I dropped Prodigy recently after 4-5 yr as their only recent answer to and every tech problem was "Youse system recourses is too low (insert MisterNice's first name), youse better call your computer manufacturer". I did not mind their use of my nice first name nearly as much as their total lack of any knowledge re computers. BTW I signed up with www.earthlink.net and to date it has run so well, I have yet to need tech support. 5000 POP too for about $20 /mo. Good luck. They had/have a promo for two months for a dolla (and BTW they really dont actually charge the dolla). I have a promo code around somewhere if anyone wants it. MisterNice |
mudgal,
Although I really am technically challenged, I think this can help with your problem: to disable Javascript in IE, first, click on 'tools', then choose 'internet options". then click on 'security'. Scroll down to java permissions, check 'disable". This worked for me; I hope it works for you. Also, a little further down the page, there is a choice regarding enabling Java applets scripting... (I did not have to change my setting but you might try changing yours). BTW, a nice technichian at my ISP helped me with this when I had the problem). Good luck! |

<font face="Verdana, Arial, Helvetica" size="2">Originally posted by ShuttleBug: mudgal, I think this can help with your problem Good luck!</font> Your suggestion brings up another question: Will I have to undo these changes for optimal viewing of other sites? Being a technoweanie, I think I know what Java is [altho' not well enough to commit to it here on the board . . . http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/smile.gif], so I don't know whether I have to keep making the change. Thanks! ------------------ It's not a perfect world. |

I don't know specifically if you will have to adjust on other sites; I do know that from time to time I do make adjustments... I wasn't kidding when I said I was technically challenged! Perhaps someone on the board with more experience and technical "know how" will be kind enough to weigh in here... Again, good luck!! |

It is easy enough to check an ISP site (or call their 800 #) to see if a free local access number is available. Baring that, go to www.opera.com and download the 2 meg non-java version of their nice fast free browser. I use it for ad-free and crash-free viewing of FT and many other sites. And it is true for IE Ver x.x, disabling java for viewing a site will disable it for other sites until and unless you reverse the java settings. As I keep java on for IE 5.5, and no-java Opera 5.11, I maintain control over much download content. Good luck. MisterNice |
