You have an old page cached.

Right click on the body of the page (or left-click if you use a lefty mouse) and select Refresh. You should see all the messages.

Argh. Must be my proxy, as my second PC had
the same problems long after the replies should have posted.

Ok, I have looked into this a bit further.
Currently, actual discussion pages are sent with:

On several discussions in Usenet (found via deja.com) I found recommendations/comments that these (META HTTP-EQUIV) don't work well with (some?) caching proxy servers, as they don't try looking into the document itself.

It is repeatedly recommended to use real HTTP headers (for which the above are only a substitute is the page-writer has no control over the server that sends the headers) instead. These would have to be configured in the webserver I believe..

While I'm not a real HTTP expert, I believe the headers used should be:

Expires: 0
Cache-Control: post-check=0, pre-check=0
Pragma: no-cache

I've had more or less the same problem with my proxy server at work.

The refresh trick usually works (but I have to refresh on the frame, not the whole page).

Thanks. As posted earlier, it seems that my proxy insisted on handing out the cached page instead of checking on a new version.

As posted above, this is likely due to the use of META HTTP-EQUIV tags, instead of real HHTP headers. Some proxier are said to ignore those META TAGS (as they appear inside the document, not in the HHTP transport headers). For that reason I suggested using genuine HTTP headers instead.

I went through a rash of this crap recently. The culprit turned out to be a program to speed up dial-up modem connections, in this case the program was called "Netsonic". Removal of the program removed 98% of the problems.

Some good feedback here. Thank you all very much for the suggestions. Give them a shot matjes and let me know how they work for you. Caching is very often the leading cause. I have the same problems on a day-to-day basis.
