Notification notice if someone quotes or replies to me?

I was wondering if it would be possible to implement a system, so that we could get a notification when someone has replied to my message or quoted us.

I have over 130 subscribed threads. Sometimes when I'm travelling I don't get the chance to check FlyerTalk for more than a fortnight, and I come back to see 30 new pages added to each thread.
Now, if there was a question I had asked or if I wanted to see if there was any constructive suggestions or criticism on something that I posted, I would have to go through 30 pages to find that post.

Slickdeals has a really good system where you get notifications if
A. A thread is created that has a tag word that you subscribed to (another great idea.
B. A user you've subscribed to, starts a thread.
C. Someone quotes you in a message.

It's point C that I'm talking about.
Like in the screenshot (from Slickdeals)

This is basically what I'm suggesting.
Whatever the notification is, would appear in that lower corner.
It could say "User X has quoted you in thread Y".

Do let me know if you guys think this could work?
Thanks.

Is anybody monitoring these threads?

IBcash Apr 8, 2013 12:19 pm

Yes, these threads are monitored :) We'll keep this in mind when developing the site. We're always open to improvements!

Is there a voting process required to implement this? Similar to how everyone voted unanimously for the WIKI idea?

This is the best feature Im missing on FT. I have tried to suggest it before.

I know right?

But I'm barely getting a response.

We are currently working on some improvements to the site. Once those are done we will look into the possibility of doing this. Thank you :)

Too funny - I'm the opposite. I post a lot on FT & I don't want to get a gazillion emails/notifications if someone has quoted me.

Cheers.

For someone like you, that's completely understandable. I think your page would be filled with notifications upon notifications each day... :p
But for us, lesser mortals, knowing when someone has replied to a post, this would be very useful.

I'm currently subscribed to over 150 threads, about 40% of them are active, and I post here and there once in a while.
Having to check EACH thread individually to look if someone has replied, is a major PITA.:o

Such function should of course be up to you how to use. You should be able to switch function on/off, notification as you want, PM/mail. And different from thread to thread. Should be put under thread tools, unless you have it as a feature on/off for all.

MilePoint does this and allows you to turn the feature on or off.

We have the ability to add things like hashtags and @replies, but there is no software that sends an alert when a member is quoted or mentioned without an @

So would it be possible to just change the code slightly so that when someone quotes a post, it automatically puts the @ in front of the username so that the person getting quoted gets a notification?

In other words, instead of "Originally Posted by IBObi", make it "Originally Posted by @IBObi"?

IBobi Feb 12, 2014 12:40 pm

No. That kind of change would be to the core software, and we would not risk site instability for a small modification.

@Ibobi Did you get notification on this?

IBobi Feb 12, 2014 2:58 pm

No -- the @ reply product is not installed. Believe it or not, installing this will create a HUGE change for many people on the forums, and we'd have to be very careful about that. To date, it has not been approved by admin for installation.

Please implement this feature. It would be so helpful.
