Backspace on android app malfunctioning

Pressing backspace while editing text has been causing an intermittent issue for me. It toggles the menu button and brings up the associated menu popup which i must press back twice to exit . The first half of this message was fine, but the second half of this message experienced the issue. Im using a galaxy nexus stock with stock keyboard.
