Big problem with page format on iPad

Just got on using my iPad, and there is a significant problem with page formatting. Huge area to he right of the ads and forms now blank white, causing compression of the forums making them tiny and hard to read. Seems perhaps to relate to far rightward positioning of "My Flyertalk" graphic at the top of the page. Makes it very hard to use. Problem shows up in both Chrome and Safari browser on iPad.

Can IT please fix this glitch? Thanks!

Doc

Im on my ipad and the formatting is perfect. You sure its not a setting? does the same happen in portrait mode?

Edit: actually Doc try double tapping in the forum frame. I was just able to reproduce what your seeing and double tapping in the frame brings it into proper formatting

Doc Savage Jan 11, 2013 12:53 am

Tried the double tap - this just zooms in, as usual with double tap.
This format problem just popped up tonight. For some reason, there is now a broad strip of white blank space on he right which compresses everything else. Worked fine last night, and I haven't changed any settings.

There was apparently a new header bar instituted recently, suspect his is some unexpected glitch. I'm sure it will get fixed.

Thats really weird....I was just able to go from what you describe to perfect formatting, now when i do it, it zooms in just as you state.

Something weird going on. Maybe they are working on it as we speak.

I don't like it. It has changed the page layout for the worse IMHO.

I usually browse on an iPad when travelling. It used to be centralised and now has a few inches of white on the right! Consequently the lettering is reduced size on the left of the page and not good for me, even with my bifocals!

antichef Jan 11, 2013 7:48 am

I posted something similar in the New FT Banner thread.

I have a big area of white to the right of where the ads are. The whole area is the width of the new banner. The written part of the FT fora are on the left of screen and are consequently in a smaller size.

Not very happy.

I thought at first it was just where the ads were -which I don't normally get on my browser, but when I logged in anonymously using Chrome I could see it was the ads and another white area the width of the ads too!!

I have the same on the ipad - very annoying having to manually size every page!

We're looking into this, thanks all!

MSPeconomist Jan 11, 2013 1:58 pm

I reported this yesterday when I first noticed the new look, about 24 hours ago.

Could someone please tell me about the tapping trick? I've tried and nothing happens on my ipad2.

antichef Jan 12, 2013 12:40 am

I think it is a reference to the iPad "zoom" feature.

If you double tap here: x

Then the page zooms in to this spot, on the iPad turned sideways, it should zoom into the text of the message. You can't see the ads on the right, but you can't see who the poster is either! A double tap on the same x takes it back again.

Double tapping on the left of the screen (on the white area below your user name) zooms into that point and cuts off the right of the screen.

Basically the iPad focuses on the point where you double tap.

It's the with of the FT graphic on top of the page..... really wish you did some testing before implementation.

It's almost blank space to the right of the "MyFlyerTalk" icon, which could be moved about an inch to the left. The global map and image of an airplane taking off could be made smaller to fit or the excess ocean space around the words members and extras could be compressed. What matters in the banner heading are the words that we can click on to access different functions and areas of FT. The pretty blue underlying picture is just window dressing and shouldn't be allowed to cause all the white space on the right.

RTW1 Jan 12, 2013 10:27 am

Yep... move the "MyFlyertalk" to the left and cut of all the extra space for the picture of Europe/Asia and we should have a decent scaling again on an iPad.
Something that's very easy to test you would presume.

Bingo!

Same issue here.

groobs Jan 13, 2013 3:08 pm

Yep, the header graphic is too wide. I can't view the source on my iPad but it would appear that it needs to be made a background image to alleviate the problem.

Update: just noticed that when the page loads initially that the page scales correctly to the screen width but then shrinks down so that everything is smaller. This suggests to me it is something loading after the forum framework like an ad placement or something.

I'm having the same problem w/ FT displaying on the Kindle Fire HD. When it first loads it seems to be normal & a split second later the font size goes small, everything shrinks & there's a lot of white space on the right hand side.

Cheers.

Same thing happens on Nook Tablet HD at a store I just visited.

Neiltoo Jan 15, 2013 5:50 am

Any update on if or when this will be fixed?

Weez_1000 Jan 15, 2013 10:18 am

I'm having much worse issues today with the pages not displaying properly and not refreshing properly.

SkiAdcock Jan 15, 2013 11:37 am

If it's happening across 3 different tablets then it's not a tablet issue, but has to do w/ the recent change by IB. Hopefully they can get it sorted very soon, as many of us now use tablets to surf FT/participate. Having the small font size & smaller display of threads is not conducive to keeping eyeballs on FT.

Cheers.

IBobi Jan 15, 2013 12:20 pm

It's a formatting issue with the new header. Tech is working it and hopefully will have it resolved soon!

Looks like they didn't decrease the width of the header, but increased the width of the page. Now I have teeny tiny print on the screen. All the time.

Doc Savage Jan 16, 2013 11:21 pm

Thanks to the great FT Tech team - it's back to normal!

MSPeconomist Jan 17, 2013 6:09 am

It's looking good for me now.

evidently you all don't use kindle fire hd :-: still having the same problem. split second it displays normally, then shrinks down. not worth accessing ft if it is going to be like this. please get it fixed. thanks.

MSPeconomist Jan 22, 2013 7:54 am

Mine suddenly started working beautifully within the last half hour. The top banner goes exactly across the top and the font size is nice and comfortable once again, with exactly the available screen width being used for most threads. If I didn't want to jinx this, I would say perfect!

Thanks!

BROKEN AGAIN!!!!

C'mon, guys! This is getting annoying.

Pat89339 Jan 22, 2013 11:26 am

My iPad was broken again this morning, but now seems to be fixed.

MSPeconomist Jan 24, 2013 2:38 pm

FT has been working well for me on my ipad over the last few days.
