Timing of TAP routes to/from US

Having flown YYZ-LIS and EWR-OPO recently, both flights were the last or next-to-last flights of the day from both airports. And since these flights don't get into Portugal until ~noon, the return flights don't arrive back in North America in time fo make any onward connections.

Are these time slots that TAP purposely chooses? Or is it something they're stuck with?

The planes are based in LIS and OPO, so it doesn't really matter when they get into LIS/OPO on the return trip from US/CAN.

To answer your question - during good times TP had a limited number of slots in LIS and planes, so they found these times to work best, given their constraints. Yes, it means that there are no connections to be made, but they probably were going after OD traffic from EWR/YYZ to the rest of the European network.
