TAP Portugal Checking Baggage Through for Later Flight
 

So we snagged a biz class deal last summer flying CPH>MIA via LIS in a few weeks. At that time our plans weren't firmed up and we figured we would grab a cheap RyanAIr flight to CPH. Well the price on that flight from OPO ended up approaching what TAP wanted so we now are booked to fly OPO>LIS>CPH late one day and board at 5:15 or so the next morning to fly CPH>LIS>MIA. Since we will only be in CPH under seven hours, we aren't going to get a hotel room but I would love to not have to deal with our baggage. Any suggestions from experienced TAP fliers on the best way to approach the gate agent here in Porto to request that they check our bags all the way through to MIA? That way we could just stay airside in CPH which from what I can tell from the sleeping in airports website is better than landslide.

Or any other suggestions on how to make an airport overnight more bearable? The lounge I can use with Priority Pass closes about the time of our arrival so even if we can figure out a way to not have to collect our bags, we still we be stuck in the airport proper.

From my experience TP will not do anything that its system won't let it do - in other words it will only let the check-in agent check your bags OPO-LIS-CPH at OPO and then again CPH-LIS-MIA at CPH. I wouldn't count on anything else.

You can't have the same airport twice on one luggage tag. So unless you can convince TAP, to check the luggage OPO-LIS-MIA it is literally not possible to avoid picking up luggage in Copenhagen

Bumping this as I have a similar-ish question - will they through-check bags in LIS if on 2 different itineraries (and departing the same day)? Looking at JFK-LIS-Italy (final destination isn't decided yet) and being able to through check a bag in JFK would almost guarantee we book TAP over FR/U2 for the 2nd section.
