Proposal: Kill the Traveling with Pets forum

It was a nice idea, but as I predicted long ago, it has been a complete failure. Most of the recent threads have been started by one person and the forum is already languishing.

If we're not going to allow things like the Fitness on the Go forum because the Special Travelers forums are failing, we need to put an end to the misery of these failed forums.

This is a good place to start. Seniors Forum should be next.

On this topic we completely agree. ^

Whatever you do, please don't kill the Men's Forum.

Oh, wait.

Agreed.

I don't understand why "Travel with Pets" was approved and this one (fitness and exercise actually seems like it would be a somewhat active board) was not.

I also don't understand why some other boards (Religious Travel) are given a special place. Is it the topic?

Dovster Oct 8, 2008 5:21 am

At the risk of sounding like a broken record, I want to repeat what I have said umpteen times: Forums take a while to get started.

Give each new forum a year. If it doesn't have 100 threads by the end of the year, close it. If it doesn't get 200 threads each following year, close it.

Oh, and don't worry about people starting threads just to keep the forum open -- TB can look through the threads to see which, if any, it considers bogus and doesn't want to count.

... and some never get going. Like Religious Travelers. Like this one.

Good luck with this proposal. ^

Without the intervention of Randy, I doubt TB will approve anything, much less a new forum, until some of the TB members can work with each other and lobby internally to approve motions - as seemed to be the case with these forums when they were approved this past year.

TB may well approve its pet proposal currently up for a vote but thanks for this one. Maybe someone or something in FT will change the minds of the current TB members, to break the TB approval deadlock. ;)

There does seem to be a lot of TB on TB crime going on. :p

Can't you all just get along?

That sir is your opinion and not necessarily that of many others who are posting there on a regular basis and have benefited from this new forum. Considering the fact that you were opposed to the creation of a pets forum from the very beginning and had campaigned hard against it on TB I knew that it would only be a matter of time before a thread like this would be started by you. Frankly I am surprised that it took so long based on your track record where you have filibustered here on the TB forum and did everything in your power to derail the creation of the pets forum.

Excuse me but I take offense to someone that distorts the facts in a manner like this. The most posts started by any single person in this forum has been nine made by obsure2k.

That person who you are referring to (kipper) recently discovered the pets forum and is a long time FT member with over 9400 posts. I would never seek to put a damper on a members enthusiastic posting which has added to the content in this forum. Granted, some of these threads have been slightly off topic, but no more so than other OT topics I have seen regularly posted elsewhere on FT and allowed by the mods on those boards.

What does this have to do with anything?
Every forum should be judged on its own merits and to make a statement like this is IMHO just an attempt to throw more poop on the ground.

Again IMHO this statement is not relevant. :td:

Finally I would like to say for the record that before you caste dispersions in the direction of the people posting on the Travel with Pets forum you should take the time and look in the mirror. A simple search shows that you spend most of your time posting either in OMNI or here on the TB forum. In fact 187 out of your last 200 posts were made in this manner with the vast majority of them being in the OMNI forum. It is of course your right to post freely wherever you wish and you should allow others the common courtesy of doing the exact same thing. At the very least, the people posting on this newly formed pets forum are doing something that actually provides information and benefits other members. @:-)

You're right. I was against this forum from the beginning like Obama was against the Iraq war from the beginning: I can see a disaster before the disaster happens.

The passage of this forum was foolish and TB should correct its mistake. It won't, of course, but it should.

---

Might I ask you the same thing, sir? Since you were the original proponent of this forum, do you think you can be unbiased here? Are you capable of admitting the failure of the forum since you've spearheaded it?

The question is not the worthiness of the member posting threads; the question is whether there are 1) enough threads to warrant keeping the forum open and 2) whether or not the existing threads are just filler. No to #1, yes to #2.

TBers are on record as saying the Special Interest forums are largely a failure. I completely agree. We need to start getting rid of them. This is a great place to start.

Huh? What in the heck does this have to do with the price of tea in China?

IMHO this forum is doing quite well considering how new it is

Some could say it is as relevant as your complaint about a member starting five new threads. Others could say that a picture says a thousand words. @:-)

BTW, and slightly off topic you should at the very least recognize the World Champion NY Giants in your signature. :)

Everything that is posted in this forum is opinion. But some opinions are backed up with data; others are not. Can you please explain to us all how the Pets forum has been a success?

Tummy Oct 8, 2008 7:55 am

I discovered the Pet forum only a couple weeks ago and find it very interesting.

I travel every week for work. Have been doing it for the last 8 years or so. We only recently got a puppy and have been finding it very difficult to adjust our lifestyle to accommodate her. We use to do mini vacations almost every month, one long weekend in Germany, one long weekend in Hawaii, one long weekend in Orlando, etc... now with a puppy, you can't really do that.

I found the info on pet friendly hotels useful and have tried to add my own findings. I would have never found some of the interesting pet hotels people listed on my own.

I'm sure as other discover the forum, there will be more traffic. Has it even been there a year yet? How can you make an informed decision when the forum is only 5 months old?

Does the OP even have a pet they travel with? It's hard to understand when you don't have a pet. I guess it's the same as my level of interest in "Fitness on the Go" or "religious travel", about none.

tommy777 Oct 8, 2008 7:56 am

I'm a little surprised to see this thread. The forum has been active a few months and has yet to be discovered by many Flyertalkers.

It takes a while for new forums to catch on and there are quite a few forums with a lot less traffic than the Traveling with Pets forum.

I have a hard time seeing the motivation for this proposal. Is it because the Fitness on the go forum was voted down that you want this forum killed?

I for one travel with pets every month or so and share my experiences on this forum and since Dogs are the new kids, this forum will grow.

Also, I can't see why anyone would care...
