This thread is becoming an OMNI of it's own.
I'm against counting OMNI posts towards a member's overall post count. |
Just out of curiosity, for those of you who do not think OMNI posts should count, why not?

Looks like punki and I had our posts cross in the night. Oops. |

I still believe that the introduction (as mentioned as a possibility by Randy earlier in another thread) might solve that problem for me: One of the plug-ins allows members to "Ignore Thread." This means that if any of the game threads just aren't your thing, you can select them and they will not appear to you when you visit OMNI. I am all for this! I don't care if OMNI posts count or not, whatever TB and/or Randy think/decide regarding the counting question is ok with me. I mind if the counting/'game' threads dominate OMNI frontpages for me - if I could eleminate their Vista - that would be fine. |
This is in no way an attack on anybody but can someone please explain to me how the majority of the posts in the linked thread below are not OMNI-esque? The only reason this thread is considered to be a count worthy post (and therefor adds validity of the poster to the community from some of the posts previously made) is because its not in OMNI?
http://flyertalk.com/forum/showthread.php?t=793065 I just want to understand how threads like this which are found all over FT are different from the majority of OMNI posts? I think (just like last time this arguement was discussed) that the majority of people thing the OMNI games are post padding but again (as argued before) this is like throwing the baby out with the bathwater if you remove all post counts from OMNI. The simplest solution is to delete and ban all game threads from OMNI which would clean up the post count issue (IMHO). |

I think if you want post count back because it's important to you, you've got to accept that the games are important to other members who enjoy playing them - not everyone is in it for the post count. You want them to sacrifice what is important to them so that you can get post count back. I'm not convinced that's entirely fair, particularly since there are ways the games can be managed to reduce their impact on OMNI and FT. |

Wouldn't that solve the problem some of us have, without having to 'deal' with the 'counting or not' question of these posts? |
Yes, that will take them off the front page of OMNI, but if you're going to count them it will be an avenue for current posters, and new posters in games yet to be started, to pump up their post count.
I posted this back in post #9 on this thread and still feel the same way: I value my post count from years of contributions on the travel side of FT. OMNI is not my home forum. I don't think we should recognize posters who build up the bulk of their posts playing games. |

Theoretically, all game threads includes the AM thread you have been an active participant in - still want to ban all game threads? ;)

How is removing OMNI posts from counting anymore fair than what I suggested with the banning of game threads? == Edit: Anyone else find irony in this being my post #666 |
tom911 I understand your position and the value argument.
Myself I don't care about individual post counts, I only care about the quality (and easyness to get the informations I am looking for or I might unfortunately miss if 'cluttered') of the front pages of my favorite fora: miles/points, travel/dining, community and OMNI. |

While I have also participated in the OMNI games threads on occasion, I do not do it to intentionally increase post count... I do it because it is a "time waster" when I actually want a distraction. I have found some of the most valuable information from OMNI posters.... and a great place to get answers to off-the-wall questions. However, I do feel that the OMNI games threads have gotten out of hand.... but I am not a fan of sub-forums in any format, so do not support that solution. As Rudi says, if the Ignore plug-in is implemented that resolves part of the issue. Bottom line for me, with the exception that the counter does not go up right now for an OMNI post, NOTHING has changed... everyone can still post there and be part of that community. For people who have stopped posting in those games threads, obviously they were only doing it for the post counts since they stopped... so that is an indication of the motivation of their posting. Not sure how increasing post counts benefits the community. While I have no problem ignoring threads I do not like, I do have to say that - for the most part - OMNI has been much "easier" to navigate the past few days. Finally, I have to agree with Tom that it appears that the motion does nothing to really resolve the underlying issue... and one TB member says it was just a motion to get Randy to talk to the Talkboard.... not sure a motion was required for that to happen. The motion really put nothing forward as a long-term solution.... just a knee-jerk reaction to a decision Randy took. Just as Randy's decision may have been a knee-jerk reaction to recent actions and complaints. William |

William The point of this motion is to encourage Randy to restore status quo ante and then continue seeking long-term solutions from there. |
