FlyerTalk topic linkable on GOOGLE but but irretrievable on FT.

This seems a desolate Forum but the only one that may yield authoritative comment to my puzzle... (any identifiable moderator?).

To the point:
If I post something on FlyerTalk it is more or less likely to come up as a search engine result on GOOGLE. I did search on GOOGLE for a topic I posted on FT, more than a year ago, and the URL was brought came up by GOOGLE's search engine.

However, when I clicked on the link I got an FT page telling me that the link is archived and in effect can't be retrieved.

In my pea-size brain I don't understand why the powers to be in FT would archive and render irretrieveable a topic - any topic - that is linkably-exposed to GOOGLE.

I believe it is in the interst of FT to make itself as much accessible to Google and similar search engines as possible.
Let alone that it makes good business sense.
Oh well.

Intrepid, this sounds like a good topic for the Technical Forum. Randy's technical staff monitors that forum, and responds to inquiries of this nature.

I believe the topic in question was probably archived, i.e. moved to the FT Archives forum, especially if it's from a year ago.

Google probably indexed it a while back, but before the thread was archived so that's why it shows the results but the link is no longer there.

With more than 2 million posts on FT having a Google spider scan the website would slow things down for everyone. AFAIK FT doesn't let Google index it anymore so most of the stuff it still shows will be outdated.

Yes, archives were put into place to try and manage the growth of FlyerTalk vs. the speed of the board. However, that will all soon chage as we are processing the plan to move underlying technologies that will allow us to re-merge all threads into one big board again. Part of this includes two things we've always wanted (well, one thing we wanted and one thing some members wanted). There will be a 'MyFlyerTalk' function that will allow you to simply page view those forums that interest you the most. As well, there will be a filter that allows members to filter out other members post to their eyes only - truly MyFlyerTalk.

Hurray, hurray!!!!!!!

This is truly wonderful news. My personal, internal "Ignore User" function is pretty good, but I long for a perfected, electronic version.

Can't wait for the new program. Thanks again, Randy, for the wonderful job that you do. http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/smile.gif

Randy,

The improvements sound awesome!

I would URGE you to maintain some sort of Archiving. It is VERY annoying for old threads to be bumped to the top.
