First-past-the-post elections

Elections in which votes are only counted on a first-past-the-post basis, with no preference run-off, devalue to nil the votes for any candidate who isn't in the running.

It's bad enough in political elections with 3 or 4 candidates, but in a race with over 40 candidates, it's utterly ludicrous and the result may grossly misrepresent the opinions and votes of the voters. Why is this election being done in this archaic way when we have the capability to run a fair preferential voting system instead?

It might be because as a volunteer run board and we simply did not have enough or any volunteers to assist with such an effort.

And, the members of TalkBoard are there for advisory roles only. This makes quite a difference.

Did you write the same thing in a letter to the Editor of the LA Times or the San Francisco Chronicle? http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/wink.gif

It's easy with a computer, and most of us have one of those. http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/smile.gif If you ever want any help with doing it as a preferential ballot, just let me know.

Analise, I find that funny. ... I wouldn't if I lived in the country concerned.
