Suggestion: Close the Gaming Loyalty Programs Forum

TCook mentioned it in another thread and I went and checked and it strikes me as a very lightly trafficked forum. The first page of threads stretches back an entire year. The existing threads could be transferred to Travel Buzz!, USA or just left to die. I think it was a forum with a good intention but one that does not seem to be appealing to enough FTers to remain open.

Thoughts?

While it's not super active in terms of overall new threads, does it satisfy a niche?

After a cursory look... The MGM/mlife forum sees posts every month and "Caesars (Total Rewards) Diamond Status for $295" is somewhat active.

Is it causing gross harm to let it remain?

28 posts in 2015 is somewhat active? Hardly more than one post per week.

No but where's the benefit to FT in so lightly used a forum? Could these discussions be housed elsewhere as easily as OP suggests? I think so though that's merely MHO.

My sense is that the casual traveler to Vegas or some casino hotel is likely to seek information here on FT (or MP) rather than looking for some specialized gambling websites. [To me personally, it would be reassuring that some of the posters who are active in the gambling forum also post regularly in airline and hotel fora, so that I "know" these people.] This is especially true if the person looking for information is already active in FF or hotel programs and want to know whether the casino properties offer similar perks that might be applicable.

It is probably a good idea to go back to May 29, 2008 and review this discussion arguing for the establishment for such a forum to better understand its purpose and creation as one of the factors pertaining to considering whether or not it should be closed.

Indeed and little it seems has changed in my opinion since.

I find it interesting that you pretty much consistently oppose opening new forums and support closing forums. Except the Travel News forum.

Not good or bad. Just...interesting.

Is there some larger philosophy in play to your mind?

What would the perfect FlyerTalk forum lineup look like to you?

Not to point out the obvious but different FTers have dif ideas on the perfect line up, none of which has anything to do with this particular forum. Stick to the actual thread topic.

Cheers.

I support closing moribund forums and you can examine for yourself if you haven't already nsx's 2014 forum stats spreadsheet which shows the amount of traffic or lack thereof in each forum.

Less is more.

Shouldn't the casual traveler to Vegas go to our Las Vegas Forum? It gets decent traffic, especially for a location forum, and has a cadre of locals and regular posters (myself included, I used to live in Vegas) who can provide all the helpful advice a poster would want.

That too, but the Las Vegas destination forum doesn't (ans shouldn't) cover casino and casino hotel programs and perks. We have some people here on FT who are experts on these issues which apply at other locations, not just Vegas.

Concur. As the moderator of the Las Vegas forum (although I had a co-moderator when this was broached last time around), I recall that part of the issue in starting the new forum was that general comments/questions/threads about gaming/casino programs was simply not Las Vegas-specific

And what he said:

is sort of my feeling on the matter. I can only imagine that there are other websites dedicated to the topic that woudl be far more comprehensive and knowledgeable.

Perhaps SPAM could be repurposed in a way that it could absorb the Gaming Loyalty Threads that actually do see a lot of traffic.

Is there any chance that a gaming program will offer something that we can, er..., game? I think not. These people are much more numerate than the managers of other loyalty programs. In the absence of any prospect for the forum getting hot, I wouldn't be bothered by a move into SPAM. But I would like to get rid of that lousy forum name (SPAM)!
