New post-count titles for FlyerTalk? Nominate your favorites!

RichMSN recently asked about adding a title that activates at 5000 posts. That discussion expanded into the larger topic of what titles should activate at what post count.

I'm a TalkBoard member but on an issue like this I have no special expertise. I don't think any of us on the TalkBoard do. Therefore I have proposed an experiment in grass roots involvement, and it appears that the other TalkBoard members like it. So here goes.

We're going to do this exactly the way we do business in the private TalkBoard forum. Discuss, identify the best options, and vote.

Please post in this thread your preferred set of titles and post count thresholds. Post as many proposals as you like. Post comments on others' proposals.

I'd like this process to take long enough for members to learn about it and participate fully. This is likely to feel annoyingly slow, but you are getting the authentic TalkBoard experience here. Please be patient.

I am confident that during this process some clear leaders among the proposals will emerge. When the dust settles, SanDiego1k (or the TalkBoard by informal agreement among ourselves) can set up a public poll among the top proposals. Then we will have the titles that our members prefer, and everybody will have had a vote.

There's one major rule that I'd like to impose on this thread. The TalkBoard is well aware that many of you would prefer removing titles entirely. That's a legitimate question, but it's a different question that is off-topic here. Besides, I'm sure the TalkBoard is nowhere near having the votes to remove all titles, so advocating that now would be a waste of your efforts. Please don't clutter this thread with reasons not to have titles.

Once we have a new set of titles and see how it works, the subject of removing the titles entirely would be ripe for debate. I very much look forward to having that debate later this year. Fair enough?

No change needed to current practice.

It's not broke; no need to fix.

The word Evangelist is, well, dumb.

Speaking as a member first and foremost:

The best thought I've seen posted includes "elite" levels like airlines:

0-999 General Member
1000-4999 Silver Member
5000-9999 Gold Member
10000-19999 (or some other threshold) Platinum Member
20000+ (or some other threshold) Member-chosen title

I think "it's not broke, don't change anything" is really off-topic for this thread as well. Needing to change it has nothing to do with this.

What is "Current Practice"

I looked around a bit and couldn't find a listing of titles and rules for achieving them. Can someone point me in the right direction? Thanks!

Although I don't yet have any specific suggestions for what the tiered titles should be, I'm in favor of adding additional titles.

Here's what I posted in the private TB forum on this issue:

That was fine in 1998 when FT was formed and before the Internet was developed.

Nowadays the popular websites are all about marketing themselves with baubles, bangles and personal recognition. The addition of a few new automatic tier titles is certainly not out of the question IMO.

Folks here value post counts more than most want to admit. They'd do the same with titles IMO. Give the members what they want especially as it's a no cost, win/win and doesn't minimize or subtract from FT's core values of miles, points and a place where you can socialize with like-minded travelholics.

I think that comes from the dot com bubble era, didn't one of the co-founders of Yahoo have that on their business card? Maybe now it doesn't have the same chachet. I'm not sure.

MilePoint already uses precious metals; perhaps we should use something like Ruby / Sapphire / Diamond.

I really like this idea! For a 2012 IBB, FT looks like bland (no avatars, sig restrictions, etc.) We need some flair, and there is already a precedent with this as a member with over 10k posts has a unique title. Appointed and elected titles could be in blue to avoid confusion, if that's a concern by some.

Agreed. Doesn't TB have more pressing matters?

I think that one goes a bit too high. I'd probably scale back Diamond to 20K, and then start with the lifetime levels, in 10K increments.
