maybe we should be talking about other enhancements such as a 'buy-up' post count option... like US airways where you can pay a fee and automatically get higher status

While we're at it, how about a challenge, where we award you evangelist status for a certain fee, and if you can make 1000 posts within 3 months, you get to keep evangelist status? And we'll match status from other forums...

I like the question of assessing "added value" to any changes.
Value in the eyes of the members, Flyertalk itself, and the ownership can all lean in different ways.
My opinion on post count titles are that they can contribute to a sense of belonging for the member at no cost, but this can work against the interests of FT and other members....
.... if it encourages posting runs, of useless posts, then it has removed value from the members and FT itself. We have seen countless examples of people pushing for the last few thousand posts... and the dribble (or frankly, with the personal attachments that can breed with such posting frequency, personal issues) that comes it their wakes.
In my opinion, putting up post titles that would encourage thousands upon thousands of posts is not in my best interests.

Perhaps it's the fact that 10K is really, really hard to get to. I've been here for over 8 years and consider myself a regular participant and still haven't hit 10K posts. And that's with posts counting everywhere now.
My original idea was to put in a 5000 post title -- something like Enthusiast to match Evangelist. This idea of revamping the whole system fell from that original idea. I'd be thrilled to simply add a 5K title.
But I do think Evangelist is a dumb, dumb term and we'd be better served with a different word in place there alongside a new one for 5K.

There's one major rule that I'd like to impose on this thread. The TalkBoard is well aware that many of you would prefer removing titles entirely. That's a legitimate question, but it's a different question that is off-topic here. Besides, I'm sure the TalkBoard is nowhere near having the votes to remove all titles, so advocating that now would be a waste of your efforts. Please don't clutter this thread with reasons not to have titles.
