Dear Oliver2002 / Others,
Thanks again for the info above.

Now that the flight has happened, I can comment: I was "really surprised" and trying to understand "what happened". Per your stats above, the flight looked "empty" or at least not full in any capacity.

My wife's sister-in-law was on this flight, going back to Brazil. I have bought her ticket via LH.com website SDU-ZRH-SDU (via GRU both ways) and this was a "cheapo" ticket. GRU-ZRH Outbound was "Economy (W)" and ZRH-GRU inboud was "Economy (T)"

On the morning of the flight, I woke up and there was an email from Swiss saying: "Dear 'XYZ' Your boarding pass(es) could not be issued because necessary data is missing or because the immigration status does not allow boarding." ... I did not make "much" of it and went online to do her check-in. There was nothing missing and I just had to go to seat assignments. For my surprise, I saw blocks of 2-2-2 which I know is wrong as Y for this flight is 3-4-3.

Long story short, she received an upgrade.

WHY??

The flight was empty, her fare was super cheap, she has no status,...

System bug? major luck? covid "spread seating"? ... I can't understand... and would love to.

At check-in I was very tempted to ask, but, didn't want to "bring unnecessary attention", so, I kept my mouth shut.

Any ideas/speculation from you all?

Thanks,
PS. She obviously loved it. first time (and prob. only) in her life!

sorry, picture is huge. i tried to make it smaller, but did not know how to.

They managed to fill the B77W in the back in these times? Weird.

That's the thing... they DIDN'T... she said Y was not packed either... so, there's no logical explanation for this upgrade, right?

Indeed. Expect her to insist on business class going forward!

LX92 to GRU is certainly a nice ride in C/J. Almost guaranteed a good night's sleep/rest before arriving GRU early in the morning.

That's for sure, especially in these days with half empty cabins. Crews are highly motivated because they fly only once a month. My GRU flight last November was a pleasure.
