Through-checking luggage to SAA
 
Hi all, I will be flying LX from EWR-ZRH-JNB in J, and then connecting to a South African flight at JNB which is on a separate ticket.Will LX be able to through-check checked luggage at Newark? Thanks for any insight.

IS (has been) possible but depends to large degree of willingness of check-in staff at EWR. Note, you are actually requesting them to TAG your bags for your onward destination: Luggage must anyway be collected by pax and customs cleared in JNB. Immediately after customs exit stay left and you find an SAA re-check station where bags can get handed over again. This assumes you connecting to SAA domestic flight. I'm uncertain for connecting to a further Regional or International.

Same for international (just did LX CDG-ZRH-JNB / SAA/MK JNB-MRU - no tagging to MRU, btw).
Try and ask, but it'll be a bit of schlepp anyway.

It's international... will keep my fingers crossed (and that SAA is still operating come April :) )
