Upgrade with Miles. Why is A-class not= A-class?
...so I'd like to upgrade a paid business class flight to first with miles.
This books into A-class, or at least it would.
It's a simple return ticket, non-stop LX flight in both directions, booked via Swiss.com
There is A-class availability according to Expertflyer.
That may not prove much, but I can even book a flight on swiss.com and that books into A for the same leg.
Still, when I called Swiss, they put me on waiting list for "A" - and that has not moved for several days now.
The agent was very friendly, but the argument would not go further than "computer says no".
Why?
Is there also a segmentation into more than one A (sub-)class for the same origin/destination to make things generally a bit more complicated?

Thanks a lot, daumueller. ^
I thought that the availability was just generated based on Origin-Destination and on the source of the request.
UA: "Can-I get...?"
LH: "Don't even think about it"
But you must be right. It's obviously more sophisticated than this.

When I wanted to upgrade from P with eVouchers I chose a flight which was F8A8 and was able to upgrade online straightaway.

upgrade availability =/= award availability =/= A availability
I find LX quite generous in upgrade/awards to First Class though, and I don't see difference between miles or evouchers.
I've successfully upgraded 'difficult' sectors such as LAX and SFO in the past 2 months with both.
