Smile 5 Hours to kill at ZRH

Hi all,
On our way back from NRT, we have 5 hours layover at ZRH before our connection to LHR. I just found out that we can get out of the airport instead of being stuck on airside, which is awesome! Any advice to the fastest and best way to get into the city (don't mind taxi but thought the air train is pretty good?) and also any recommendations to what we can do when we are there?
How long does the journey take by the way, so that we know how long we actually have to spend before making our way back to ZRH.
Many thanks in advance!
Jake ^

The train to Zurich has great advantage over taking a taxi: it gets you into the center of town at the lowest cost and the fastest way ^^

Trains are running. I suspect almost all shops will be closed.

Despite the shops being closed I think it will be a beautiful and quiet day to visit Zurich. If you really need some shopping my guess is that everything at the airport will be open (IIRC)- tons of the big Swiss brands are there including Navy Boot etc as well as many watches in the plus 10 000 CHF range if you are wanting to do your "part" to assist the Swiss Franc in staying as one of the strongest currencies in the world

I had 5 hours transferring at ZRH in 2011 summer as well, and trained to town to visit, and I liked it a lot. Didn't really visit any shops though

See my blog if you want reference, and a walking map is quite handy

So in my book, enjoy the empty Bahnhofsstrasse, especially in the morning!
The train station is right under the airport, quite easy to walk to. You should get 24h ticket which will take you to Zurich center and back plus allows u to use public transport in Zurich for free. You will arrive at Hauptbahnof (main station).
A good idea could be to walk down to the lake following the famous Bahnofstrasse. Maybe u will find a nice cafe open in a side street. Walk back on the Limmat (the lakefront) or take the tramway.
If you like Museums, walk around the station (short walk) and visit the Swiss National Museum, open on JAn. 1.
