Kill the Orange adverts!!!
 

I hope that this is the correct forum in which to post this thread over ORP or tech issues.

I have found the most frustrating ad that I have ever come across on the internet and it is here on FT!! The advert itself is for some free SIM card with free text and in itself is quite harmless to look at.

However, when reading through a thread with the ad displayed, every few seconds the ad redirect you back to where it is displayed within that page. So whilst I am trying to discover whether as a LX F passenger flying FRA-ZRH-DXB I qualify for FCT access, the post that I am attempting to read disappears and I now find myself looking at this blasted Orange advert. EVERY FEW SECONDS!!! Now I am attempting to read fairly short posts but I would hate to thing just how more annoying this would be for somebody ready a long post (like my QR Trip Report).

Please, please, please do something about this before I go insane or stop visiting FT. Believe me, it really is that bad!!!

Thank god I'm not the only one!!!! That Orange ad is driving me nuts!!!!!! I certainly wouldn't buy anything from a company who's ad annoys me so much!

Every time the ad restarts it's little animation, you get redirected back up the page to the post where it is located.

Ads? What ads? Go with Flyertalk Premium.... support Flyertalk for $12 per year... and you never see ads again.... a small price to pay to support Flyertalk!

Seems like this ad is only targeted at our UK based members...

To be honest, I knew this would be a "solution" proposed, however, I do not feel that this is a satisfactory outcome. I have no problem with the ads which I normally see - it did take me a while to get used to the ads in posts which happened a while ago.

I am happy for FT to sell ad space, as I am happy to be a user of said website. HOWEVER - when that advertising becomes invasive, and prevents effective use of the forum, I can not understand how:
a) that is beneficial to the forum itself, as it is inadvertently stopping me from using it, and thus, removing me as a (potential) customer
b) proposing the paid service is any kind of solution to the problem itself

I have been on FT long enough to know there is a premium ad-free offering, but I have sofar chosen not to use it for the reason outlined above. I am not about to let some badly coded advert change my principle on this - I would sooner stop browsing given that my activity here has diminished in recent months since the nature of the BA forum has become more hostile.

It is an invasive device.
and to suggest using the premium service as the only solution to get rid of it is akin to blackmail.

I could of course uninstall Macromedia Flash or turn on my Virusscan Advert Blocker; then I wouldn't get any adverts. But I've never done that before because it's not in the spirit of things.

I thought that the ads were there in the first place to 'support' FT? Anyway, we all support FT by making contributions...without which FT would be nothing more than a derelict website. @:-)

Now I know that I may be speaking too soon and tempting fate but...I have not seen the offending ad anywhere on FT for around 45 minutes.

I was making an honest suggestion... ads go away... and it is a way to support Flyertalk.

And, I do not believe I ever said it was the ONLY solution to get rid of ads.

I would not take that personally wharvey. I doubt that you have seen the offending ad but I can assure you that it is incredibly frustrating. I think that I just about managed to bite my tongue long enough but I can understand others fearing that it was a FT subscription sales ploy. If that was my thought and two much experienced mods (yourself and ScottC) came in and suggested a subscription as the answer, I too may have jumped to the wrong conclusion.

Sorry, I was a tad frustrated and it was nearly the end of the day (in my timezone)!
I didn't mean to suggest it was an intentional means to force people to use the subscription service; it was more that at the time none of the mod's posts seemed to indicate they were interested (which also made it seem like the only solution was that recommended).

I'm glad it's finally gone.

And I've calmed down now. :)

FWIW; the mods have nothing to do with the ad policy on FT. Heck, we have to pay the $12 just like anyone else to get rid of the ads :D

I've seen my fair share of annoying ads on the web, and especially on a site I spend a lot of time on I'll be willing to pay a small fee to get rid of them, even though I have a perfectly effective ad killer running.
