"Personal" Forum
I would like to suggest a creation of a virtual "Personal" Forum. This forum will be available to user after they login and will list all the topics, regardless of real forum, to which the user has posted.
This will function like an expended search with “Search by User Name:” with user name=<me>. But will not be limited to one forum (as the current search does). And will also be accessed with a single click, compared as with the current search which requires going through an extra screen and data entry. Thanks, ------------------ Sagy |
The problem is that it would require us to enable the Search All Forums function, and then hack its functionality as well as the overall FT display scripts.
We disabled the Search All Forums functionality a while back since it causes a pretty significant drain on our server. This is caused by the way UBB stores data and then accesses it through the search. We understand the usefulness of being able to search all forums at once (There have been plenty of times I could have used it for admin reasons http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/smile.gif ), but due to the immense amount of postings, high traffic, and a currently overloaded server, we removed that option. We are currently working with a new hosting company to move some of our other sites off, and give FT a little more breathing room. When we have everything back in place, we'll be better able to determine if we can turn the Search All back on without it impacting performance. |
Dan,
Thanks for your answer. I think that I wasn't clear in my original suggestion. I'm not looking for a way to search all forums, I used that as a way to describe the functionality of my suggestion. Let me try again and see if I can do a better job this time. Can FT create for each user a virtual forum that will contain all the topics to which the user contributed. One way to accomplish this is to keep a list of pointers all the topics each user participated in. Every time a user posts to a new topic, a pointer to that topic will be added to the user's list. While this solution will require storage space, it will accomplish what I'm suggesting without the need to perform any searches. I have to admit that I have no idea how much storage space this will require nor do I know if the software you are using can be modified to accomplish this. Thanks for your time. ------------------ Sagy |
