That new opening screen is kind of spooky

I just wanted to say that even though I'm somewhat of a lurker, I liked the opening screen the way it was where it just showed all the groups and didn't have them catagorized like the new opening screen does when you click on FT Miles at the http://www.flyertalk.com homepage. I had to go back and re-enter FT Miles because I thought something had broken.

My suggestion is to change it back to the way it was before today.

Edited to say that I just read the Tech Talk board and see that the new and somewhat unpleasant opening screen is part of a fix.
But I agree with the others there has to be a better way.

I couldn't agree more, this is a continuation of the OVER-CATEGORIZATION of Flyertalk!

From a spacial (that's spacial, not special!)and asthetic point of view it is awkward and ugly.

From a practical user standpoint, it makes you go through so many more levels on your browser, back and forth, back and forth, back and forth, back and forth, back and forth, back and forth......

Annoying isn't it? EXACTLY!!!!!!

Step 1 you've probably already noticed, as it involves truncating the main Miles forum listing into just categories. Don't worry, all the threads are still there, and in the places they were prior. By shortening the main page listing to just categories, we're reducing the amount of data that has to be sent every time a visitor hits that front list. This was a direct suggestion from the creators of UBB, and although we're hesitant about such a dramatic change, and are aware of the confusion it may bring initially, we're going to see if this actually does provide a little alleviation. Just click into the category you want, and you'll be provided with its forums as before.

Randy said elsewhere that all posts over past 12 months will be archived, so speed and resources will be freed up now. Great idea. http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/smile.gif

I fondly remember when you typed in the home page and ALL forums possible were shown there, and you simply clicked on the one/ones you wanted. No selecting if you want Miles/Dining/Travel/Hotels/Cars etc and slowly grinding between them as now.

I can navigate now, but it takes 10 minutes and I know what is out there. A new first time visitor I think will not have that patience, or no idea of WHAT is actually here. Therefore, I really wonder what has been gained in the past 2 or 3 overhauls?

Sometimes the wheel does not need to be re-invented. http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/wink.gif

Yes, it is "tough" on newbies for sure, yet I believe it is only part of an attempted tempoary fix until the current overhaul is completed!
