Wow! Hard core! I answered the question and recommended some sleep...but I now see that drbala is not near my time zone.

FewMiles, I humbly apologise if I somehow foolishly read into your post above that it was a recruitment suggestion for nologic and I to go join "TOBB".

And Dorian, I do not feel the debut post was asking whether it could be edited. Dismissively telling the poster to "go back to sleep" certainly appeared extremely rude to me. But again I humbly apologise if I misread it in some way.

And I indeed thought he (Dorian) was trying to be lighthearted, after all the heavy stuff earlier; but, I suspect had the comment been directed at me that I would have felt it's barb a little more directly.

But I do have a question for those old time FTer's: "if there were such problems way back when (a year or so ago), why haven't there been all sorts of similar problems more recently, and why isn't the recent lack thereof sufficient indication that things are/were really ok over here?"

Also, if the original problems had to do with flare-ups over abusive & offensive posts, why/how does that issue get mixed up and combined with the relatively harmless issue of off topic posts? (Actually, for many of us, moving/closing posts is more harmful than allowing them to flourish.)

nologic, you nailed it.

It appears to me that many FT "elders" take our posts/discussion to mean that we don't want moderators, period." Nothing could be further from the truth; but since they were around when all the "trouble," whatever it was, started, the automatic, rote response seems to then be, "you're wrong, period."

Who in their right mind would deny the need for moderation of flame wars, personal attacks, etc.? Not me. Not many.

What this debate has boiled down to is not whether moderators are needed (that's a given, assuming they're here to keep things civilized), but, now that moderators are here, the method of moderation, and the attitudes of those doing the moderating. Those are two very fair topics, IMO--and ones you don't need to be an "elder statesman" to debate, as they affect all of us on the boards today.
