24 hours vs. Daily lists
What would people think of changing the daily topic list so that instead of resetting at a given time, items fall off of it after 24 hours. People who log on an hour or so before the list resets (currently) get to see all updated threads without many key strokes. This is a global board and this change would eliminate any one time zone as being the default.
Comments welcome, this is just a suggestions and if you want to shoot it down, go for it. http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/smile.gif |
Yes - good idea. Keeps resurfacing, nothing ever happens, but its a very good idea!
(Think about it - I go to bed at 11 pm which is 4 pm CT... get up at 7 am which is midnight CT.... lose the last evening posts from the US when the board is very busy! Thus the feature is currently worthless) |
Any improvements that could be made in the Daily Topic List would be appreciated and this is also a very good one.
As many others post please. |
I bring this one up again hoping someone at FT will see it and act on it???? http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/smile.gif http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/wink.gif

It would be very nice for us not resident in the American time zones. If it were possible ...

I've always thought it would be nice to see "since you have last visited." If you look at the URL for "today's active topics", you'll see that it looks like the capability is there.
Just a thought. ------------------ The only difference between ordinary service and extraordinary service is a little EXTRA. -- Bob |
Great idea.

Bringing this one up yet again until someone at FT gives it a yes or no. http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/smile.gif

This would require a code rewrite by UltimateBB I believe.
Maybe a post to them? http://www.ultimatebb.com Dorian ------------------ Star Alliance RTW Price Chart: http://www.informationlab.com/rtw.htm Star Alliance Comparison Chart: http://members.home.net/deercroft/starall.html |
Dorian, this may or may not require a code re-write. Someone from FT who runs the system should know and it would be nice if they would comment vs. me having to contact the source code provider/writer? Why no answers from FT? http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/smile.gif

Hello everybody. It looks like quite a few of you are pretty adament about this. I think it's a good idea as well.
We haven't moved on a number of suggestions recently because we are talking about going to InfoPop's "OpenTopic" bulletin board system and making any changes at this point in time would be a wasted effort. For those of you who don't know, "OpenTopic" is the enterprise edtion, essentially, of UBB. That is to say that it is made by the same company. It's considerably different than what we are using now. Not so much in what you will see on the front end but defintely very different on the back end. It's written in JAVA and XML as opposed to the PERL which this board is written in. Very different languages. If we decide against going with OpenTopic I will start implementing some of these suggestions asap. I intend to champion the cause for FlyerTalk "Personal" pages where you can control the content you wish to see on your own personal page. i.e. You will be able to see "just" the info that you want to see and hopefully in the way that you want to see it. It'll be a big undertaking but I think it'l be worth it in the long haul. Questions? Comments? I appreciate your imput...keep it coming. ------------------ ThanX... Michael at WebFlyer |
Thanks very much Michael! http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/smile.gif

Yes, thank you very much. http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/smile.gif

I love you guys! I never, ever noticed the 'daily topics list' until this!!!

Michael - I am not a computer techie, but I not that the new proposed board is written in a different code from the current one. I wouldn't be in favour of any change that meant we couldn't access the existing two years of FT posts - they are a valuable archive.
However, I love the idea of personalizing the board http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/smile.gif |
The Opentopic looks quite nice, I really hope FT moves to it...much more robust and modern coding.

james, thanks for pointing to this issue as it has been a major stumbling block for us for sometime now. I'm sure we are all aware that as nice as UBB is, it has some major problems and the fact that the data is written in an idiosyncratic fashion that is only useable by this BB system has kept us from going to another, possibly better solution.
We've been told by InfoPop that their OpenTopic will allow us to import all existing data. We remain vigilant on this front however since we have no desire to lose the existing content. There is some very good info up here. Thank you all for your support and continued patience. ------------------ ThanX... Michael at WebFlyer |
I'm relatively new to this board, but I do intend to go thru some older topics on a rainy day with the wife out of town..
So please do not lose the older postings! I too agree with the idea about a 24-hour clock on the daily topics list, but I understand that it would be worthless effort if you are going to switch the board to a new system. I hope that when you have a changeover it won't keep this board down very long or at all. If it must be down, please plan to do it when I'm on a busy business trip.. http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/wink.gif |
