W Hotel Los Angeles pre 2007 [Master Thread]
I'm staying there this weekend. My wife claims that there are private pool cabanas that guests can reserve. Is this true or is it another of her fanciful stories?

TimMeineke, I can confirm that the hotel has 8 cabanas that they rent for $125 per day. They are available from 10 AM to 5 PM.
Available amenities include a dining table, ceiling fan, music, phone, internet access, and a tv. Also included are 2 reserved poolside chaise-lounges.
For an extra charge, AWAY spa can provide a massage or facial at the cabana.
For more information, contact the hotel directly at 310-208-8765, x.5888.

Last time I was there we just sat in the cabana and watched Sunday NFL games and ordered breakfast and drinks. They didn't charge me the $125 but they were not really busy either.

W LOS ANGELES - STAY AWAY!!!!
Had one of the worst stays of my life recently. Really bad place. They offered me a free return stay, "to make it up to me" and I declined! Rock music blaring everywhere, high prices, weird, weird furniture, purple lights in the elevators, cordless phone kept beeping all night because battery was low, they never replaced it. Why torture one's self at this property when you can stay at the st. Regis LA or the Century Plaza?

While I always like the W brand in most cities, I've shied away from the LA one after reading various posts here. I'm a BIG fan of the St. Regis and Westin Century Plaza, which are not far away, and very close to Beverly Hills.

This thread says stay away:

Do you all agree?
I am asking this since there's equal good and bad reaction towards the W LA.
This would be my 1st W stay so I would rather stay away if it's that bad.
Is it true that this W was recently renovated???

The W LA rocks... Would I recomend this to my 88 year old grandma no. However, you must now what you are getting into (not goood or bad) and should treat your visit as so. I would take this hotel on the busiest Friday over any 4pts or sheraton in the country,.

This is a beautiful and interesting property. Not for everyone.I had a few stays when it first opened.Had so many problems it was amazing.Elevators were not working and took 20 minutes to arrive.TV remote controls not working. All my phone messages were lost by the hotel. They told callers I wasn't even registered .I missed business and social appointments.Room service tray stayed in my room for 3 days after requesting it to be taken.Service was green and sometimes non existent .Attitude prevailed.Normally I find LA friendly. The bar and restaraunt was a lot of fun however.Liked the staff there. The GM was in denial except to say come back one day and it will be better.
Well I did and it wasn't.Still no Platinum Ammenity. Had no heat,no shower curtain, staff barged in without knocking and so on.Call me a victim for punishment after reading your post but I am returning next week hoping for a miracle.Thr rates have come down and its worth trying again I think. They have had a lot of time to improve and its a last ditched attempt.Figers crossed!I really loved the Suite itself.
I will report!

Why bother trying to figure out whether this W is trully as horrible as some describe or not-so-bad? Either way, you got one of Starwood's best properties in the world nearby - The St. Regis LA. Don't even waste your brain cells, forget the price and take the St. Regis and you won't regret it.

Was there two weeks ago and I have to agree it's not that fabulous. The weight room and pool were nothing special, and we were awakened at 8am on Saturday morning by a truck picking up the garbage. the bar is cool and the staff very friendly, but I can't recommend this as a place to stay. I like to party, and I much preferred the Westin Bonaventure with its upgrade to a suite shaped like two pieces of pie.

I have only had bad experiences at this hotel! When I have called to complain about my stays there (before the St. Regis opened), customer service told me that they couldn't wait until the St. Regis opened because all they hear about are bad experiences at the W. Go the St. Regis! It's one of the best hotels in the world!

Thanks for vindicating me. Anyone that thinks that the W Hotel in Westwood 'rocks' is, in my opinion, describing the content of their brain. This really is a bad place. As others have pointed out, the customer service response is very poor, which to me indicates a lack of concern. Having all of these negative comments previously should have caused a hotel that was concerned about their public appearance to alter their conduct, but it obviously has not affected them in the slightest. They are a badly run hotel. I would certainly go anywhere else than the W.
I had my mother in law with us at our last visit. When we entered the lobby, she asked my wife if I was saving so much over the St. Regis that it was really worth it, and before we got to our room, she offered to make up whatever difference there was for us to return to the St. Regis. Money didn't enter into the decision at all. The front desk clerk would not let me cancel my reservation without charging me a full night's stay, which is what prompted me to check in at all.
