The following hotels have been voted as the worst in the Starwood portfolio of hotels.

Hotels with a low number of votes, and there is a majority that only have one vote each, should be taken with a huge grain of salt.

Moreover, several hotels have had significant renovations since the original vote(s) were cast. As a result, negative votes for those properties should be discounted.

> June 2014: Bath towels stank. Night staff at front desk were curt and unkempt -- a guy had crooked glasses and dandruff all over his suit jacket. He frowned several times while processing my check in. No smile or welcome, verbally or nonverbally. While I was checking in he received phone calls from several guests, and he refused every request swiftly, firmly, and without apology: "No. What?! No. Housekeeping is closed." I trashed the hotel in a post-stay survey and received an apology from the manager with a vague offer of a future room upgrade. No compensation.

> May 2013: Sloppy housekeeping; room had trash left behind by previous guest. Broken AC; maintenance fixed for the afternoon, but it broke again overnight. Front desk, upon checkin, claimed no king rooms available (only doubles) despite non-suite king rooms for sale on spg.com. They assigned me a room by the elevator where I could hear nonstop dings and whooshes from the elevator shaft. Front desk was staffed by an uppity fellow who never cracked a smile. What a joke of a 12k points redemption.

> December 2012: Moldy shower tiles. Some rooms were so tiny you'd think you were in Tokyo. Irritating whoosh-whoosh from elevator shaft if room was close to elevator. Bad insulation of sound from hallways. Low class clientele - loud and boisterous folk who enjoyed bragging at 3 a.m. about sexual conquests. Low class front desk - when I asked for a room change because of noise, they asked me if my room was dirty.

> December 2014 (Royal Beach Club room): Heavenly bedding in name only, if at all. Mattress lacked the signature plush comfort; linens were thin and scratchy, pillows were flat and unsupportive. I slept on my bended arm and in the fetal position for warmth. Woke up sore and exhausted every morning despite 9-10 hours of sleep. Lounge breakfast was bland; happy hour was a joke -- buffet ran out within minutes of replenishment. If you wanted the hot item you had to keep tabs on the staff and hustle to the front of the line ASAP when a line began to form.

Chicago Westin on North Michigan

I've stayed here at least a half dozen times: ugly modern building, no real restaurant--just an all-day dining coffee shop, insuficient lobby bar space--several tables shared with a coffee place, no lobby beyond an area for people to stand in long lines to check in/out, and pre-renovation cigarette burns, stained and filthy carpet, battered furniture. The waiting time to check in/out averages about an hour, while standing in a packed, hot and stuffy passageway; the line creates an obstacle course between the door and the elevators. Staff are indifferent and/or aggressively rude.

The last time I stayed, I was supposed to get the Presidential Suite because the organization I headed then was taking over the hotel for our meeting. The renovation was behind schedule, so no Presidential Suite for me...instead they gave me two new adjoining rooms (that smelled of wet paint and on a low floor), one with bedroom furniture and one with living room furniture, but the connecting door was painted shut. The staff couldn't understand why this was a problem since I could go out into the hall to get between the rooms of my "suite."

To access some of our function rooms on the top floor, we had to take the service elevator to the highest floor with regular hotel rooms, walk the length of the hotel, go up the fire stairs and then walk through a catering kitchen and a construction zone.

Since then, I've been invited to several meetings here but I just say no.

After literally falling on garage cement (in hotel garage) at 2:30 a.m. after walking down 15 flights (read at least 120 stairs) of stairs due to a "false fire alarm" - not a word of empathy from GM or Front Office Manager.

I suffered a bad abraison on my knee - I had to go to a doctor.

the GM had the nerve to say it was not the hotel's fault because a drunk guest had pulled the alarm.

I was absolutely apalled...

EDIT: Ooops, I stayed at SHERATON GATEWAY LAX - not SFO. I stayed there recently and I found the male Front Desk manager went above and beyond to rectify my issues...which I will post in the actual hotel thread but short story is they are selling Club Lounge rooms (with rates that are higher) which I booked so I could access the Lounge, to find they have decided to shut the Club Lounge over the weekends but still have the rates on the website . Asked for a quiet room, away from airport noise, check in girl (who wasnt that friendly) tells me that she has given me their best view. Get to room, the sound of planes landing was extremely LOUD. Changed to other side of hotel, much quieter. Housekeeping coming to my room and banging on the door in the morning of check out despite the come back later sign hanging on my door and already arranged LATE check until 4pm. Then standing outside talking LOUDLY after I had told them we were sleeping . Being totally ignored in the Rendevous Lounge after twice going to ask for a menu and for our order to be taken because we were needing to get out of there quickly (it was after 11pm and I had MINI DG with me).

Sheraton Anaheim would be on my list too. Ugh...where do I start. In their so called renovated rooms, stained carpets, stained furniture, no bathroom amenities - had to request, no wash cloths, a manager telling me that the room type I requested prior to my stay was unavailable to me because its LIKE A suite and they sell them for more money. Are you serious? Try finding those rooms in the SPG inventory....dont exist. Yes, she was adamant....but I have stayed in these rooms before and they are NOT suites, not even studios, just a bit larger. Hearing them upgrade a guy on a Virgin Holiday package when I was checking out was the icing on this bad stay. They DO NOT value SPG elites at this property and I have tried them twice for stays of 5-6 nights over the space of two years. The first stay wasnt that great either.

However, Sheraton Princess Kauliani was a pleasant surprise for our one night stay. As a gold, I was "upgraded" to one of their renovated "enhanced" rooms on the 26th floor, Flat screen tv, mini fridge, complimentary brewed coffee in the morning, with an ocean view from the lanai ^. Sure, they are not that new or flash but it was quite a nice room and we saw no sign of mould or rats . Thankfully too, cos I would have been down at reception to see the manager, if that was the case .

You really have to stay at this place to experience it. I have stayed at Econolodge in my student life and can guarantee you that they would beat this place hands down.
Worn out, dingy rooms, Passageways which are like tunnels with a 7 - 8 ft ceilings and dim lights, small windows to rooms and have no clear view of anything, You have to search to find the entrance. I can go on and on. I had to stay there twice during Priceline stays and I stopped using Priceline after that.

What hotel is that? Do you mean the Westin Chicago River North or Westin Michigan Avenue?

Sheraton Gateway Atlanta

- No definitive line for SPG Preferred Guests. They had a line of 20 people in the starwood line with hotel vouchers.

- I was 'pre-upgraded' using the new e-mail upgrade system to a club level room from the traditional room. I also had a comment in my reservation for a room away from the elevator. My 'upgraded' room, of course, was directly next to the elevator.

- Hotel Clerk made no mention of my rate that I booked with free internet. Had to inquire to be sure there would be no charge.

- Hotel Clerk made no mention of the club lounge existing nor of any hours of operation.

- Had to inquire about the platinum amenity.

It's amazing to me how many of these properties have better SPG alternatives -- often in the same brand! -- right nearby. I can count at least seven properties in the list that have excellent, consistent SPG properties very close to them -- and that's only the ones I've personally stayed in.

Thanks to Jaejaez for maintaining the list.

Wow - this is one of my favorite hotels in the chain. The front desk clerk Yvonne is amazing. The rooms are lovely and the location can't be beat!

I think that my worst hotels are as follows:

Reston
Westin Arlington Gateway
Prince des Galles (although amazing location!)

It all comes down to customer service for me. Everybody has a bed; it's only the customer service that makes the difference.

....
But that won't matter at all for this thread. All the OP cares about is cherry-picking the so-called "worst" experiences (as arbitrarily determined by any poster, no matter how trivial or unreasonable the complaint), categorizing any hotel fingered in this way as a "bad boy," and putting them all into a "hall of shame."

Agreed. And several "critical" FTers, like you and I, have given the place good marks. However, the above posters experience, may have been bad or maybe their expectations were not inline. (shrugs shoulders)

Correction - I do not "cherry-pick", all votes are accounted for, regardless of how much I disagree (i.e. Sheraton Laguna Phuket)!

As for your other point on this list being based on arbitrary and subjective opinions of FTers (a valid point, I'd say), I'd like to direct you to my previous post from Jul 15 '09 as below:

however, i'd like to argue that on the list being 'useful' there is substance... the more votes the property gets on this list, the higher the likelihood of it really being a bad one. list shouldn't be used as a sole source of info in making ur choices of hotels but could def be one of the guiding posts.

also, i have yet to see an FTer that just bashes properties out of rage alone.
