The following hotels have been voted as the worst in the Starwood portfolio of hotels.

Hotels with a low number of votes, and there is a majority that only have one vote each, should be taken with a huge grain of salt.

Moreover, several hotels have had significant renovations since the original vote(s) were cast. As a result, negative votes for those properties should be discounted.

> June 2014: Bath towels stank. Night staff at front desk were curt and unkempt -- a guy had crooked glasses and dandruff all over his suit jacket. He frowned several times while processing my check in. No smile or welcome, verbally or nonverbally. While I was checking in he received phone calls from several guests, and he refused every request swiftly, firmly, and without apology: "No. What?! No. Housekeeping is closed." I trashed the hotel in a post-stay survey and received an apology from the manager with a vague offer of a future room upgrade. No compensation.

> May 2013: Sloppy housekeeping; room had trash left behind by previous guest. Broken AC; maintenance fixed for the afternoon, but it broke again overnight. Front desk, upon checkin, claimed no king rooms available (only doubles) despite non-suite king rooms for sale on spg.com. They assigned me a room by the elevator where I could hear nonstop dings and whooshes from the elevator shaft. Front desk was staffed by an uppity fellow who never cracked a smile. > December 2012: Moldy shower tiles. Some rooms were so tiny you'd think you were in Tokyo. Irritating whoosh-whoosh from elevator shaft if room was close to elevator. Bad insulation of sound from hallways. Low class clientele - loud and boisterous folk who enjoyed bragging at 3 a.m. about sexual conquests. Low class front desk - when I asked for a room change because of noise, they asked me if my room was dirty.

> December 2014 (Royal Beach Club room): Heavenly bedding in name only, if at all. Mattress lacked the signature plush comfort; linens were thin and scratchy, pillows were flat and unsupportive. I slept on my bended arm and in the fetal position for warmth. Woke up sore and exhausted every morning despite 9-10 hours of sleep. Lounge breakfast was bland; happy hour was a joke -- buffet ran out within minutes of replenishment. If you wanted the hot item you had to keep tabs on the staff and hustle to the front of the line ASAP when a line began to form.

W LA Westwood. It's been years (2007) but the memory of a very drunk man attacking me and trying to get into my room just won't go away. Neither will the memory of the ineffective security keeping me on hold while I tried to report a crazy man running the halls (he ended up attacking/attempting to attack other women on the floor) and the manager on duty NOT calling the police, and talking me out of doing so (at the time.) It's been YEARS and I'm still freaked out. I was up all that night on the phone with my hubby and I still have nightmares about it. That man turned out to be a SPG member who was drinking in the bar but had no room. He got on the elevator, drunk and dangerous.

Must add that the NEW manager contacted me a month or so later and agreed to work with me when I finally called the police. A very nice man, he DID do a lot to help, but I never heard back from him regarding the man's arrest. They knew who it was, but I guess didn't report him to police? I STILL have copy of police report that I made from home. I would've liked some closure. The contradictory info I got made me think it is still an open case.

I have since heard that they've implemented better security with the elevator. But I still would rather have heard that the man, despite his SPG status, was arrested.

Either way, I couldn't recommend this hotel as I wasn't safe and could've been hurt much worse. Of all my stays in years as a Plat, this is my most memorable stay, though not b/c of anything good. Any man who puts his uninvited hands on another person and causes trauma should be held accountable. Just my opinion.

Le Meridien Helioplolis. Should be closed down and the entire staff dismissed. A total disgrace in every category!

The Sheraton Sharm makes the Meridien Heliopolis seem like a palace in comparison. At least the Meridien I have always been upgraded and treated well by the staff despite the shabby building.

The interior of the Sheraton Sharm is far worse and there is no Platinum recognition that would be recognisable as such or anything helpful about the staff. The Sheraton Sharm is THE WORST Starwood property I have ever stayed in and must rank as the worst property of any chain I have ever stayed in.

Starwood should be ashamed to have this property carry it's brand.

On top of my hall of shame is/was the Le Meridien Montparnasse. Unfriendly staff, old rooms, elevators never work.

But is not running under the Le Meridien brand anymore.

Just discovered this thread recently. Gonna post my worst experience for each year that I have been an SPG member (except '05 and '06 when my stay activity was limited).

2007

Four Points Miami Beach: I was DJing at the Ultra Music Festival a few years back. I sent my gear ahead of my arrival via FedEx. I saw it had arrived at the property the day before. When I got there, however, my gear was gone. In addition, jewellery (no, I wasn't sporting bling like Flava Flav... it was a Star of David necklace that was passed down in my family) disappeared from my room. I went back and forth with management. Filed a police report. Property was never recovered, but the show went on. Oh, and did I mention that the room was a toilet? Yeah, the property was like a poor man's Holiday Inn.

Solution: When staying in Miami, I generally choose the Westin Coral Gables. It's a nice hotel located near a swank shopping area.

Random Note: I think what attracted me to the Four Points brand in 07/08 was the fact that my first ever stay was at the Four Points Savannah Airport. It was a nice, new, clean property near my brother's base. The rates were reasonable. Breakfast was great. Easy access to the airport or the highway. Now it is with another chain... Wyndham? IDK how it ever left SPG though.

2008

Four Points Midway Airport: Unlike the last property, this property was actually a Holiday Inn that changed over to SPG. It was no where near MDW. The shuttle to the Orange line wasn't 24 hours. The rooms still had all the original Holiday Inn decor and furnishings.

Solution: For Chicago stays that don't break the bank, I prefer the aloft Chicago O'Hare, but I think they are opening up an aloft Downtown Chicago soon. Until then, the CTA finally fixed up the Blue Line, so it isn't as long or terrible a trip from Rosemont to the Loop. If you must stay downtown, then the Sheraton Chicago Hotel and Towers or W Chicago Lakeshore are great downtown options. Obama approves of the former.

Random Note: This stay actually belongs in 2007, but I moved it here since this stay was so close to 2008 (and I didn't have a bad stay in '08).

2009

Westin St. Francis: This property was exceptionally old, which I appreciate. However, the rooms were so @#$)(#%* noisy from inside foot traffic and the homeless persons concert outside. They also re-painted the room, so "refresh" was more like "refresh... by inhaling deadly paint fumes whilst your mucus turns neon green, and you go insane from lack of sleep."

Solution: You must stay at the W SF. It's an awesome property, with an amazing staff, and the parking is cheaper than all of the other SPG properties if you have brought a hybrid.

2010

SLS Beverly Hills: I read up about this property ahead of time on FT. I was expecting to be amazed by the rooms, the service and the restaurants, but it was a big, fat turkey of a stay. I had to wait over an hour to check into their room (an upgrade, which they totally mis-represented). I was supposedly being checked into a "Studio Lifestyle Suite," but it was in fact a terrace room. Apparently, they allow guests to keep pets in their room. One guest did so (unaccompanied), so it spent a good portion of the night barking it's head off. When I complained, management could offer nothing more than a pat on the back and a kick in the .... #%*@ them!

Solution: Save your money and stay at the Sheraton Downtown Los Angeles or the Westin Bonaventure. I've heard horror stories about the rest, and SPG doesn't really have a consistently good offering in the area.

2011

Who will make the grade this year? Find out... next year!

All hotels with Ice machines

when I want a bucket of ice , and that means every evening at 8:30pm I'd like it brought to my room .

iiwwwwwww hotels with ice machines

but if I really have to be hotel-specific. the best I can do is to say I'll never stay in any Sheraton branded hotel again. I utterly hate Sheraton.

Westin Maui. Never again. Overpriced, overcrowded, no upgrades, bad food, have to fight for pool chairs and, staff feels like they're doing you a favor by showing up.

Oh, and when another rude customer yelled (for 15 min) at my 85 year old grandma for taking *his* chair (she's there since 7am, who would have known the chair with one new towel was his?), the dear Westin Maui staff didn't do anything. Actually they sided with the guy and not enforce their policies.

Especially bad considering I was hopping between La Paloma Resort and Tucson Sheraton Suites.
I know its a a very old post, but the 4pts Tucson WAS used as a DORM in 2000, when the U of A ran out of legitimate dorms to house already confirmed incoming Freshmen.

Princess Kaiulani is one of the worst hotels I have ever stayed in. The last room had stains on the carpet, drapes, bed linen, towels. Please stay at the Sheraton Wakiki or Mona Surf Rider if you can.

Clearly you haven't stayed at some of the Sheratons I can think of - a few of which are among the experiences I have ever had - or you wouldn't make such a sweeping statement.

Cheers,

Worse than the Sheraton Towers in Cairo? A pretty dumpy property with a very dodgy staff. Turns out that it's owned by the Gov't of Egypt, so the refresh schedule is the same as that of the Giza pyramids.

I can't compare because I haven't stayed there, I have stayed twice at the Meridien Heliopolis though and the Sheraton Sharm is significantly worse.

Interesting... We considered SPG for Egypt but ending up going HH in Luxor and MR in Cairo. The Marriott Cairo was solid...probably a tad above average for the brand....and the HH Luxor was excellent, in the top 5 Hiltons I've ever stayed in. I had no idea that Starwoods were not very good. (The Sheraton Luxor reviews I had read were so-so...)

Rude, unhelpful front desk staff, but the worst is the walls are so thin (no kidding) that you hear every single word in the rooms and hallways next to you. I called the front desk and asked to be switched after I had three long renditions of Mary Had a Little Lamb from the little girl next door. Then her brother hit her to make he stop and the adult spanked him. The front desk told me they could move me, but "all Westin's have very thin walls".
