I even came down to the lobby in workout shorts once.

The hotel decor can seem to have an attitude, which my kids picked up on. They would have preferred that the hotel have less style and more functionality. But the staff simply were attempting to make their best impression.
No attitude at the W's in NOLA either just good or bad service

Umm, it's only fair that the guru of search would be providing us a thread for reference at the same time?

Like the OP, my first boutique hotel experience was at the W SF. I too felt the "attitude". I think by "attitude", I like to think of it as being pretentious.

W SF - pretentious (synonyms!)

W Newark - semi-pretentious... had an interesting experience with a horde of ants in my room and was given attitude by the CSR as if it was MY fault!!!

W Montreal - no issues here with "attitude".

W NOLAs - both ok properties.. the W FQ had better service... the W across from the casino had abysmal service... but overall not much attitude felt in the Big Easy.

Interestingly enough (and slightly OT), I've stayed at the ARC hotel in Ottawa and it had a sense of the W brand (or vice versa). I'd say the attitude at the ARC was way more noticeable. I hate that property!

I avoid W hotels (and others of their ilk) - I love modern decor and design, but life is too short to put up with the pretentious model-wannabee manques who treat me like an ebola patient because I don't meet their standards.......

Too true! Sometimes it seems like the staff are there checking out the scene in the bar and not spending enough time doing their jobs...

I visited the W Kowloon a few months back. Besides being really cool (even in West Kowloon!), rooftop pool, great view, the service was very earnest and sincere as opposed to being, well being "smug" like in W SF.

Now that I DIDN'T expect from Hong Kong at all...

So from what I've gathered so far from people's posts is that:

1. If you don't look good (or according to the W staff), then yes, they give you attitude.

2. If you look good (or according to the W staff), then no, they don't give you attitude.

Is that right?

Well in fairness to the staff, you are a Canadian resident and the Lord only knows what types of disease you people have. LOL

Honey, I just don't give a d*mn! They are there to serve to me without making eye contact. They are to be seen and not heard. Remember, they are "the help"!

I really don't understand how people could think employees of the W have attitude? I guess I'm just an uncaring sarcastic -s- b---h!

I can't imagine W staff think I look good, and yet I really haven't gotten attitude. Or perhaps I have and just haven't noticed it or cared?

I walk in, I feel like I belong there because I have a reservation and am paying (whether cash or in points), and that's really all there is to it. Whether in Westwood, New York, Seattle, or otherwise.

I'm definitely not one of the beautiful people! But I've never felt out of place or unwelcome.

^ Exactly my point.

If you are confident about yourself, then you wouldn't care about what "attitude" people give you. If you act like you belong then you certain belong!

Believe me a lack of 'confidence' is NOT my problem (even given the fact that sometimes, on airplanes, mothers ask me to shield my face so that their children won't cry).

But why pick, and pay dearly for, a place where condescension seems to be part of the ethos, when there are multiple nearby hotel options, where my greatest fear is of nondescript or inept service?

I don't care if someone gives me attitude, but that doesn't stop me from noticing someone giving me attitude! Like, I don't care if they don't look at me when they're talking to me, but I'll notice that!

You mean Beaveritis?
It's highly contagious.

Oh very well.. I guess I'll have to search the SPG forum using the word "condom" as the key search word.

I have stayed in tons of W's, frankly they're my last choice amongst *wood properties (well, OK, I'd take one over the 4Points)

I can't stand the dark hallways, the thumpin disco in the lobby, the pick up scene at the bar...

I am 48 and they make me feel 78, I am so out of touch with the clientele there.

Give me a Meridien or a St. Regis any day over a W.
